Global shares, euro rise after Bernanke speech

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks and the euro rose on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke kept the door open for future monetary easing, although he did not deliver a clear signal of imminent action that markets had hoped for in a much-anticipated speech.

The euro and European shares rose as signs emerged of progress toward a deal to tackle the euro zone's debt crisis.

Bernanke told central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, that progress in bringing down U.S. unemployment was too slow and that the central bank would act as needed to strengthen the economic recovery.

But investors focused on what he had to say about monetary policy and the stagnation in the U.S. labor market, which he described as "of grave concern."

Bernanke said the Fed had to weigh the costs and the benefits of further stimulus, but he also downplayed potential risks from unconventional policies. He argued that the Fed's asset purchases, known as quantitative easing, had been quite effective at boosting economic growth and fostering job creation.

"I think when he talks about 'grave concern,' that says it all. Further accommodation is coming, it's just a question of how it manifests itself," said Scott Graham, head of U.S. government bond trading at BMO Capital Markets in Chicago.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 75.83 points, or 0.58 percent, at 13,076.54. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 5.54 points, or 0.40 percent, at 1,405.02. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 13.04 points, or 0.43 percent, at 3,061.75.

In Europe, the FTSEurofirst <.fteu3> of top regional shares closed up 0.5 percent at 1,082.93 in thin trade, erasing the previous session's losses and ending the month almost flat.

MSCI's all-country world equity index <.miwd00000pus> rose 0.5 percent to 321.94.

"The basic problem for investors at this point in time is that everyone knows the Fed considers the current economic performance to be unacceptable, but is it unacceptable enough for them to act today or tomorrow before the election?" said Cary Leahy, senior managing director at Decision Economics in New York.

"I don't think this speech answers that question," he said.

Bernanke said the Fed would provide additional policy accommodation as needed, a remark that was a somewhat weaker hint of policy easing than the minutes of the Fed's last policy meeting had delivered.

"The market was looking for him to not throw any cold water on the prospects for QE and he didn't throw any cold water on it," said John Canally, investment strategist at LPL Financial in Boston.

"The timing is a little bit iffy, but he didn't come out of the box saying that there has been substantial and sustainable improvement in the economy. Because he didn't do that, I think it's just a matter of time," Canally said.

The dollar fell to a three-month low against major currencies at one point.

The euro was up 0.5 percent at $1.2562, while the U.S. dollar index <.dxy> was down 0.5 percent at 81.303.

Investors have hoped that more monetary easing would revive economic growth and support demand for oil, for example.

Brent crude was up $1.61 at $114.26 a barrel, while U.S. crude added $1.55 to $96.17 a barrel.

Treasury prices rose. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 12/32 in price to yield 1.5858 percent.

Spot gold prices rose $23.35 to $1,678.80 an ounce.

East College camera rumor found false

A rumor that new cameras have been installed in the tower to prevent students from breaking in, has been found false. The university hasn?t installed any new cameras around East College, and Angie Nally, Director of Public Safety can?t figure out why the rumor started.

?The camera has been up for years,? said Nally.

A construction crew working on the sidewalk outside of East College facing the Union Building led to a rumor among students that the university placed new cameras around East College. These cameras were thought to stop students from climbing up to the East College bell tower. The construction crew was trimming back bushes around the building.

Nally warned about the dangers of climbing to the top; students need to take caution before attempting to reach the top of the bell tower. She said it is ?exceptionally dangerous.?

Aside from personal injury, Nally said that climbing up to the bell tower is considered unauthorized entry. If caught the violator could face charges of criminal mischief on top of the unauthorized entry through DePauw and the state.

Senior Polly Haight said climbing up the bell tower hadn?t crossed her mind until the rumor started that a camera was in place to stop her.

?I think a lot of other hallmarks on campus are sought after, like Boulder Runs,? Haight said.

Haight said she had heard that climbing was dangerous and would encourage students not to attempt to climb.

?I don?t even know how to get up there,? Haight said. ?Being a science major I?m restricted to Julian.?

Nally said in the last four years no DePauw student has been caught entering or exiting the bell tower.

One senior successfully climbed to the top of the bell tower during his sophomore year with two other friends, none of whom got caught.

?It was the end of that year, and we were talking about how great [climbing to the top] was,? he said. ?We just sat there and talked.?

The hardest part about climbing to the top was cutting the pad lock on the door leading from the hall into the tower, which he said he did not do.

?All the stairs and ladder are in place,? he said. ?Students are known to break down the door.?

He thought making the dangerous trip to the top was a safe event and many would enjoy it.

?[The bell tower] has the most beautiful view of campus,? he said. ?It definetly is on a lot of bucket lists for students.??

Police arrest 3 in assault on Wisconsin RB Ball

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Three suspects accused of assaulting Wisconsin running back Montee Ball were arrested Tuesday, nearly a month after the Heisman Trophy finalist suffered a concussion during an early-morning attack near campus.

Three 21-year-old men from Madison are facing battery charges but haven't been formally charged, according to a police report. Authorities have said Ball sustained a concussion when he was attacked by several men in Madison on Aug. 1.

Police have said the attack may have been related to an altercation at a house party that Ball attended a few days earlier, though detectives say they have no evidence suggesting Ball was involved in that fight. The altercation is still being investigated, according to the police report.

Ball, a Heisman finalist last season as a junior, has denied any involvement in the fight and says he hopes to be ready for the season opener.

According to police, Ball was walking down a street around 2:15 a.m. on Aug. 1 when two friends walking ahead of him turned around and saw him on the ground, surrounded by several men who were kicking him in the head and chest. The attackers fled when one of his friends and a man across the street moved to help him.

Ball had a stellar season last year, scoring 39 touchdowns to tie Barry Sanders' NCAA record. He finished the year with 1,923 yards rushing and 2,229 all-purpose yards, second in Wisconsin history only to Ron Dayne's 2,242 yards in 1996. Ball capped the season by rushing for 164 yards and a touchdown in the Badgers' 45-38 loss to Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

He announced days after the bowl game he would return for his senior season after NFL evaluators told him he would have likely been a third-round pick.

Match Making For Boomers: How to Get Your Man to Love You ...

Have you been asking yourself about how to get your man to love you forever? Do you sometimes feel that your man is losing interest in you or as if he doesn't love you the way he did?

Every woman wants to know how she can attract their man even more and keep him in love with her forever. Women are usually afraid to lose their loved one so they always try to hang on to their relationship. It is a known fact that keeping a romantic relationship strong is difficult and it is something that you have to work on it everyday. While women are easily satisfied with a secure and peaceful relationship, men in nature want an active and adventurous one. Therefore, it is important to know what you can do to keep your man addicted to you and your relationship.

The following tips on how to get your man love you forever can help you improve your relationship with your man and keep him for life.

Be kind not just to him but also to his friends and family. Believe it or not, men also treasure their friends and families, just like women do so make it a point to value them as much as he does.
Men love women who are kind, loving and gentle. Being submissive should never be considered as a weak trait - you could be submissive to your man but still maintain your confidence and independence as a woman. The secret is finding a balance between the two.
Be there when he needs you. There will be times when your man is going to be facing difficulties in life and might even become weak. It is important that you always be there to support him through tough times. This is where a woman's power and strength comes in the relationship. Have enough strength to help him and give him encouragement whenever he needs it.
Be your man's inspiration. If you want your man to respect you, inspire him. Encourage him to do better not just on his job but as a human being in general.
Be devoted to your man as well as to the relationship. Men, just like women, need loyalty. Making him jealous just to get his attention may not be a good thing if it is done constantly. You can make him a bit jealous in the beginning of your relationship but if you have been together for years, even a little jealousy can create a conflict that could lead to goodbyes. Always remind your man that he is the only one in your life and make him feel it.

Keeping your man isn't really rocket science - be kind, gentle yet strong, be his inspiration and be loyal. Maintaining a lasting relationship should never be difficult. If you love him and couldn't live without him, try everything that you can do on how to get your man love you forever.

Medical exemptions from school vaccination requirements across states explored

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? In states where medical exemptions from vaccination requirements for kindergarten students are easier to get, exemption rates are higher, potentially compromising herd immunity and posing a threat to children and others who truly should not be immunized because of underlying conditions, according to a study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases and now available online.

Nationwide in scope, the study found inconsistency among states in standards allowing medical exemptions from school immunization requirements. The investigators concluded that medical exemptions should be monitored and continuously evaluated to ensure they are used appropriately.

In their study, Stephanie Stadlin, MPH, Robert A. Bednarczyk, PhD, and Saad B. Omer, MBBS, MPH, PhD, from the Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta, evaluated state medical exemptions from kindergarten entry requirements over seven school years (from 2004-'05 to 2010-'11), which totaled 87,631 medical exemptions nationwide over the period studied. The researchers found that, compared to states with more stringent criteria for getting medical exemptions, states with easier requirements saw a significant increase in these exemptions. Their findings suggest that requiring more accountability of both parents and physicians for granting medical exemptions can be helpful in ensuring that these exemptions are valid and not used as an alternative to non-medical exemptions because they are easier to obtain.

"The appropriate use of medical exemptions is important to maintaining sufficient herd immunity to protect those who should not be vaccinated due to medical contra-indications," said Dr. Omer, the senior investigator of the study. "Medical providers, parents, school officials, and state health officials are responsible for ensuring that medical exemptions are actually medically indicated."

In an accompanying editorial, Daniel A Salmon, PhD, MPH, and Neal Halsey, MD, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, noted that "children with valid medical exemptions need to be protected from exposure to vaccine preventable diseases by insuring high coverage rates among the rest of the population. Granting medical exemptions for invalid medical contraindications may promote unfounded vaccine safety concerns." The researchers' findings, they added, should be useful to those responsible for implementing and enforcing school immunization requirements at the state and local levels.

Fast Facts:

 1. Rates of medical exemptions from kindergarten immunization requirements were higher in states where these exemptions are easier to obtain and in states that allow permanent compared to temporary exemptions.
 2. The appropriate use of medical exemptions from immunization requirements is important in maintaining community or herd immunity and protecting public health.
 3. Improper medical exemptions from school vaccination requirements can result in serious and life-threatening infections in children and others who truly cannot be vaccinated due to underlying conditions.

Disabled pets show they can do all kinds of things | KDVR.com ...

DENVER ? Some special? pets got the chance to strut their stuff over the weekend at the Denver Disabled Dog Olympics.

Nakio the ?bionic dog? was just one of the animals featured at the event. He walks on four prosthetic legs after losing his toes to frostbite.

Even without the full use of his legs, Nakio and other special needs dogs showed they can still master an agility course with finesse and skill.

?With the prosthetics, we can take him on walks. We can do anything a normal dog can do,? says Weston Pace. ?He can run, he can play. Actually, this whole event is kind of to show all these disabled dogs can do anything normal dogs can do.?

The event also helped owners learn how to live with and take care of disabled or special needs pets.

Archos GamePad 7-inch ICS tablet announced with physical buttons ...

Archos has had a busy month here in August with their new lineup of Android tablets. One however that completely went under the radar has finally been unveiled this morning. Archos just announced their all new ultimate gaming tablet they are calling the Archos GamePad. This is a 7-inch dual-core tablet with built-in physical controls and analog sticks. Check it out below.

Archos is calling this ?a new type of tablet experience? by bringing dedicated game controls to Android. You have dedicated buttons and even analog sticks for precision driving in games like Asphalt 7: Heat. As you can clearly see above this has the usual Archos look with a little added gaming presence. You can see the usual analog sticks, d-pad, and 4 button options but then there?s an addition two buttons we aren?t too sure about. The Archos GamePad will have full access to the Google Play Store, will be running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, and they?ve designed a dedicated mapping system to make every game run with ease.

Under the hood the gaming tablet will rock an unknown 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and the Mali 400mp quad-core GPU for gaming graphics. Most likely this will be a Texas Instruments processor but we can?t be sure at this point. Archos also points out they?ve developed a mapping and game recognition tool that will automatically make almost all popular and recent Android games fully compatible with their GamePad, and users can customize it to their liking too. Archos claims over 1000 popular games already have full support and work great.

We don?t have any additional details at this time but Archos promises their all new next-gen gaming tablet will be available starting at the end of October for less than 150 Euros. That equals out to be around $179 USD. Expect us to get one in for a full Android Community review so stay tuned.

Ouya Wants to 'Disrupt' the Console Industry | Games and Me

After years in the gaming industry, Julie Uhrman started to notice a significant shift ? excitement for console and PC gaming started to fade, while mobile platforms got all the attention.

Uhrman, whose resume includes executive roles with video game companies like GameFly, IGN, and Vivendi Universal, set out on a mission to bring gaming back to the living room. Her idea was to develop a $99, Android-powered video game console that offers free-to-play titles for gamers, and is accessible to developers.

?I started reaching out to game industry professionals and developers and asked them if we could build a game console on Android for the television,? Uhrman said in a recent interview with PCMag. ?Resoundingly, I got ?that?s a great idea, I can?t believe that hasn?t been done before,? and the idea of an open game console that leveraged Android, a very popular and well-used operating system, came into vision.?

Ouya 2

Keeping with the theme of openness, Uhrman and her team took to the crowd-sourced fundraising platform Kickstarter last month to solicit the financing they needed to produce the console ? dubbed Ouya (right). You probably know the story by now, but if not, then here?s the gist: the company initially sought to raise $950,000 on Kickstarter but ended up with $8.6 million in donations.

When she talks about Ouya (rhymes with booya), Uhrman?s passion and enthusiasm is infectious.

?Ouya is really an audacious plan to disrupt the console industry,? she said. ?

Uhrman isn?t alone in her excitement. The company?s list of advisors reads like a who?s-who of gaming industry luminaries. Plus, pre-orders are blowing away expectations, and thousands of developers have expressed interest in making games for the platform.

With promises to deliver its first batch of consoles by next March, some have questioned the company?s ability to actually deliver. But if Uhrman has any concerns about meeting the deadline, she isn?t making them known.

?I am absolutely confident that we can deliver on our promise to build a great product with great content for March of 2013,? Uhrman said.

PCMag sat down with Uhrman recently to find out about the purpose behind bringing a product like this to market, where the team is at with the effort, and more.

PCMag: How long has Ouya been in development and what has gone into the process of designing and building it so far?
Uhrman: We have been working on this since the end of last year. Ouya is really an audacious plan to disrupt the console industry and it is three parts: hardware, software, and a game ecosystem.

Yves Behar

We needed to first vet the assumption that we could build a powerful, beautifully designed game console for the television for $99. We partnered with a lot of individuals who had built hardware before ? advisors and friends. We brought on Yves B?har (left), who built the Jambox and has beautiful designs and understands how to build for an audience.

We are not building a rocket ship here ? all of our components are commodity components. We are taking something that is very common and combining it in a new way. So we first validated that it was possible to bring it to the audience for $99.

Then we had to determine what the right business model was. We believe in openness and accessibility, and we chose Android as the underlying operating system. As it relates to a business model, we embraced something that core gamers have embraced both on a PC and a mobile platform, which is the idea of free-to-play games.? For us that really means free to try.

Every game on Ouya has some element that is free for the user, and then it?s up to developers to determine how they want to monetize the content. They can choose in-app purchases, subscriptions, or a fully paid version after the free demo.

Games can run from $0.99 to $59.99 but, fundamentally, every gamer gets the opportunity to try something for free, and that is basically the core value proposition of Ouya. It?s an open, accessible, affordable game console for the TV built on Android, where its $99 and all the games are free to try.

It?s also accessible for developers in that for $99 you get a game console and an SDK. Our game console is also a debug kit, and there are no yearly licensing fees or expensive SDKs. You get a game console and all the tools you need to build great games for less than the price of two console games. We embrace an app submission model similar to mobile, so anybody who ever wanted to build a game for the TV can do so.

Ouya parts

PCMag: How did you come up with the name Ouya?
Uhrman: We worked with Yves B?har and the fuseproject on that. Openness is very important to us as it relates to developers and gamers and the way we even brought the product to market ? leveraging Kickstarter. The O in Ouya stands for openness.

PCMag: When did you first realize that this idea resonated with people?
Uhrman: Early on we took the idea to developers and received overwhelmingly positive response. Brian Fargo became an investor and advisor. Adam Saltsman, Adam Nash from Mojang, Jordan Mechner ? all of these industry luminaries, including Ed Fries of the original Xbox team, who became an advisor ? believed in this idea of openness and accessibility and allowing anyone who wants to develop a game for the television to do so.

Then when we took this idea to Kickstarter, we were overwhelmed by the level of support from gamers. In a matter of 29 days we had over 63,000 backers ? people who believed in Ouya and want Ouya in their living room and are telling us so by opening up their pocket books and pre-ordering our device, which won?t be available until March of 2013.

Kickstarter really gave us the ability to open up a two-way dialogue with gamers and developers and find out if this is something that they want, and the response was overwhelming. This is absolutely something that people want. I have thousands of emails from developers wanting to develop for the platform.

I think that this is something that is incredibly timely in that, there was nothing new announced at E3, and there was a lot of talk about whether consoles are dead. We don?t believe consoles are dead, we just believe that we need to re-think the business model and I think we?ve proved in a very short amount of time that gamers and developers want this.

PCMag: How has the scope of the project changed from when you thought you?would be (maybe)?working with $950,000 to now, when you?re working with almost $9 million?
Ouya1

Uhrman: A majority of the money that we raised is going directly back into building consoles for backers who have pre-ordered the device, building tools for game developers, and to help fund game development when it makes sense.

$950,000 ? that was the amount of money we needed to bring Ouya to market with a certain number of units. As there was more interest through Kickstarter, we went back, talked with our partners, vetted the numbers, and basically increased the number of units that we could ship on day one.

The money that we raised on Kickstarter will allow us to deliver all those units in March and effectively provide features and functionality sooner to developers then we had originally planned.

Continue Reading: Can Ouya really deliver?

Monleek Town looks strong for Carling Sprint Trophy

The two consecutive triumphs during the first half of the this month infused immense confidence in the David Pruhs trained black dog, Monleek Town, who poses ?to be the strongest candidate for the high-profile race of the Carling Sprint Trophy that will take place at Nottingham racecourse on Monday night, August 27.

The open race over 305 meters offers ?150 for the winner. After breaking from the red box, the two-year-old young hound will fight hard to complete his maiden hat-trick. He possesses a decent track record at this venue.

The talented son of Kinloch Brae out of Miss Lee started his career on March 22, 2012, breaking his maiden with the title of the Betfred Maiden Sprint Trophy that took place on April 30. He moved on to finish first again in the very next start named as The Romford Stadium Sprint.

The dashing dog nicely gained to runner-up ranks in a row during the month of June. He grabbed a grand victory in the Pepsi 235 Sprint For Dogs Only ? Dup, held at Peterborough on August 4.

The best thing about the enthusiastic hound is that he had been the hot favourite candidate for each of his last four starts. Monleek Town has made some glittering marks in OR format of the game.

Thus, it is anticipated that the maverick sprinter will have all the chances to thrive. The only rival he needs to wary of is Ballymac Denis who has been winning with regular intervals since the dawn of the calendar year.

The S. Buckland trained brindle dog?s last OR victory came in Stadium Bookmakers Standard that was held at Oxford on May 10. He was the 7-4 favourite for that race.

The son of Ballymac Maeve out of Ballymac Peg went on to win a T3 and a T2 race in the month of August. He too has impressive record in this format.

In this situation, a fierce duel is expected between Ballymac Denis and Monleek Town. This will amuse the sport fans a lot. Let us move to the venue to enjoy the charged action. Good luck to all the six hounds.

How Bain Capital execs lower their taxes - The ... - Fortune Finance

FORTUNE -- There has been lots of talk over the past few days about how Bain Capital executives have used management fee waivers?to effectively lower their tax payments (a tactic that is not unique to Bain). Some academics have argued that such waivers are an illegal dodge, while private equity tax attorneys I've spoken with call it "aggressive but accepted by the IRS."

Here is the basic structure: Bain officially charges 2% management fees to investors in its private equity funds. The idea is to cover overhead, such as salaries, office leases, electric bills, etc. ?But Bain has lots of other business lines (venture capital funds, hedge funds, etc.) that generate sufficient cash flow, so it "waives" the PE fund management fees. Well, sort of. Limited partners still pay the 2%, only it flows directly into the fund, as part of Bain's general partner commitment (which is between 10% and 15% of Bain's total PE fund capital, an unusually high percentage).

By doing so, Bain partners don't pay ordinary income taxes on their management fees. Instead, they pay at capital gains rates if/when the deals generate profit (because it's now considered carried interest). It appears that the partners irrevocably waive their rights to the returns if the deal returns less than par, although I don't have access to the LPAs that would spell it out more exactly. That said, sources do tell me that Bain partners cannot take waiver-related capital loss on failed transactions.

Sources sympathetic to such structures cite an IRS ruling (93-27) that specifically seems to allow such waivers, under a notion of partnership risk. Critics say that rule is being perverted, because the risk of loss is so low.

I'm not well-versed enough in IRS minutia to render judgment, but do feel that such structures should be banned going forward. Management fees are a fee for service. As such, they should be taxed as ordinary income. If Bain wants to eliminate management fees altogether, then move to a 0-and-32 structure.

To be sure, I have no problem with fund managers pushing some of their fees into funds. I think it's a good thing, as it's a tighter alignment of interests. But I don't see why their capital should be cheaper than that of the high-net-worth investors in their funds (who paid taxes on their pre-commitment monies). Doing so, in fact, depresses that alignment.

Tax law is a funny thing, because certain?strategies aren't black and white. They're subject to interpretation. When I asked a PE tax attorney if what Bain is doing is allowed, she told me that "allowed" and "not allowed" isn't always the right way to think about it. Okay, understood. But some things are explicitly permitted (treating carried interest as capital gains, for example) and other things are explicitly prohibited (taking deductions for work expenses for which I was reimbursed). So let's just add this one to the latter list.

Frankenstein programmers test a cybersecurity monster

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? In order to catch a thief, you have to think like one.

UT Dallas computer scientists are trying to stay one step ahead of cyber attackers by creating their own monster. Their monster can cloak itself as it steals and reconfigures information in a computer program.

In part because of the potentially destructive nature of their technology, creators have named this software system Frankenstein, after the monster-creating scientist in author Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus.

"Shelley's story is an example of a horror that can result from science, and similarly, we intend our creation as a warning that we need better detections for these types of intrusions," said Dr. Kevin Hamlen, associate professor of computer science at UT Dallas who created the software, along with his doctoral student Vishwath Mohan. "Criminals may already know how to create this kind of software, so we examined the science behind the danger this represents, in hopes of creating counter measures."

Frankenstein is not a computer virus, which is a program that can multiply and take over other machines. But, it could be used in cyber warfare to provide cover for a virus or another type of malware, or malicious software.

In order to avoid antivirus software, malware typically mutates every time it copies itself onto another machine. Antivirus software figures out the pattern of change and continues to scan for sequences of code that are known to be suspicious.

Frankenstein evades this scanning mechanism. It takes code from programs already on a computer and repurposes it, stringing it together to accomplish the malware's malicious task with new instructions.

"We wanted to build something that learns as it propagates," Hamlen said. "Frankenstein takes from what is already there and reinvents itself."

"Just as Shelley's monster was stitched from body parts, our Frankenstein also stitches software from original program parts, so no red flags are raised," he said. "It looks completely different, but its code is consistent with something normal."

Hamlen said Frankenstein could be used to aid government counter terrorism efforts by providing cover for infiltration of terrorist computer networks. Hamlen is part of the Cyber Security Research and Education Center in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.

The UT Dallas research is the first published example describing this type of stealth technology, Hamlen said.

"As a proof-of-concept, we tested Frankenstein on some simple algorithms that are completely benign," Hamlen said. "We did not create damage to anyone's systems."

The next step, Hamlen said, is to create more complex versions of the software.

Frankenstein was described in a paper published online (https://www.usenix.org/conference/woot12/frankenstein-stitching-malware-benign-binaries) in conjunction with a presentation at a recent USENIX Workshop on Offensive Technologies.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Realtors? Take Bad Photographs | Leading Agent Real Estate ...

But all is not lost?.. There?s an app for that :)

The thing about our marketing agency, is that our Mondays are Fridays, and our Fridays are Mondays.

Instead of happily anticipating the upcoming weekend, my marketing team is working double time to make sure we get all the last minute open house orders (e.g. flyers, postcards, etc.) designed, approved, printed and couriered to the listing agent, or the listing.

We?re always at 120% capacity on Fridays and the stress is at an all time peak.? As a result, sometimes my stress gets the best of me. Case in point, this past Friday. One of our clients called us on Friday, mid-morning, wanting to send us photos and property information, so we could get flyers together for their open house this weekend. This is a regular client of ours, and we were already over capacity, so the way I looked at it, what was one more job on the pile?

Then, the photos and property info came in. The property info was basically all there, but the photos were awful. Some were out of focus, some had strange shadowing or lighting, and all of them were off center. Not the best way to represent your listing, and certainly not the best way to make your seller happy.

We couldn?t use these photos. In fact, after seeing the photos, I didn?t even want to touch this job and wanted to call our client and tell her I couldn?t make this job happen for her.? When I called her though, come to find out, she did not have time to get a photographer out to the property, so she took the photos with her iPhone. As they say, ?it all rolls downhill?, so I needed to figure out how to help her out of her iPhone debacle.

Truth be told, in general, I think iPhone?s are PERFECTLY FINE for taking property photos. The lens in the iPhone camera is nicer than many digital cameras I?ve seen Realtors? schlepping around. The problem, as is the problem most of the time, is Realtors? take their own photos with expensive, technical, SLR cameras that they simply don?t know how to use (i.e. the settings on the camera, the right lens to use, etc.). So by not knowing how to use the tool in their hand, they turn out bad photographs. That is similarly a problem with mobile phone photos as well, as they require a different set of tricks, to pull them off.

Happily, it turned out that our client?s listing wasn?t that far from our office, so I arranged to meet her there and see if I couldn?t help her out. Wanting to ?teach her to fish?, rather than ?give her a fish?, I was clear with her that I wasn?t going to bring our staff photographer with me and have him shoot them for her, but rather go there myself, and show her some tricks on how to pull off a photo shoot in a pinch.

DISCLOSURE: I know very little about traditional photography. I have a photographer on staff, so I don?t have to. Because of that, I?m not going to get in a big discussion of best SLR practices, setting up your scene to shoot, etc.? Professional photography is hard and I think training, and/or execution of a photo shoot such as that should be left to the professionals, and not some ?marketing guy? that has a blog on the internet.

I am though very proficient at taking a basic tool that wasn?t originally intended to be used for something, and finding a way to make it happen. To those ends, I am going to focus on my client?s iPhone and how I got her on the right path.

1) Be sure to clean the lens of your phone?s camera

When I got there and took a look at my client?s phone, I came to the quick realization that some of the blurry photos we saw, may not have actually been blurry, but the lens on the camera was smudged with gunk, thus making it impossible to take clean, clear photos.

You have your phone in your pocket, or purse all day. If you?re like me, when you get to a restaurant, to work, or anywhere you are going to be for an extended period of time, you probably pull it out and throw it on the table, so you can keep an eye on any work emails, or emergencies that occur.

The thing is though that those tables your phone sits on are dirty. Taking a quick second to wipe off the back of your phone will give you 100% better results. It?s quick, easy and won?t take you but a second to do.

Aps to the rescue (insert sound of trumpets here)

Real Estate Agents are super busy and really don?t have time to learn ?extra stuff?. Let?s face it: Their job is not to be the best photographer. Their job is to sell homes.

I can relate to being busy. I can also understand that it?s not realistic for us to give long tutorials or instruction on something, such as photography, to a Realtor, especially if they are in a fever pitch to get a listing ready for a last minute open house.

As a result, over my years of running this agency, I have focused on finding quick ?down and dirty? ways to get the job done, keeping anyone from realizing the effort was a ?Hail Mary?. Happily, when it comes to photography, there are apps for your smartphone that will make this a breeze.

While adjusting the lighting of a room is important, many times a photo may look blurry, or off center, simply because you moved slightly when you took it. With a point and shoot, this becomes problematic, simply in the sense that if you moved the first time, when you take the second shot, it is likely you?re going to move again. BUT, with an app on your phone that allows you to take rapid fire shots, your chances of having one gem, in a string of photographs is greatly increased.

While there are many apps on both the iPhone and the Android platform, my personal favorite is one from the iPhone app store called Fast Camera.

One great thing about this app is that the second you open it, it?s ready to go. There are minimal settings, so you don?t have to go into tons of trial and error. Perhaps the greatest thing though, is it?s high definition, rapid fire photo taking capabilities.

So, if you are in a living room and want to snap a great shot at the perfect angle, that captures the openness of a floor plan, snap away. Once you?ve taken 10-15 photos, you can easily review them, keep the one or two you think are lighted correctly, focused well and centered the best. The ones that are blurry (perhaps your hand moved a bit when the photo was taken), can be easily deleted, on the spot, from your camera roll.

Again, there are many apps that are out there that do the same thing a this one (some of which are free), but for $2.99, I think this is a perfect business tool that you will use over and over.

What happened with my client?s photos? Well, after a little adjustment to the lighting of the rooms (nothing fancy, simply turning on more lights and angling the blinds a little bit), we downloaded the Fast Camera app to her phone, and within minutes, she had things figured out. Of course not every photo taken was perfect, BUT for every series of photos taken, there were one or two gems that made the listing look like a champ.

I think it?s safe to say my client is going to be ?fishing? for many listings to come.

UN official says Somalia transition is too slow

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The U.N. representative to Somalia said he is "deeply concerned by the ongoing delays" in choosing all the 275 members of parliament who will select a new Somali president.

Somali elders must select the legislators ahead of the planned election on Aug. 28 of a speaker and a deputy, U.N. Special Representative Augustine Mahiga said on Saturday.

Mahiga said there was no "time for delay," and urged the technical committee and elders compiling the list of parliamentarians to "continue working together in a spirit of mutual trust and flexibility to fulfill their responsibilities as defined in the protocols."

In an exercise praised by the U.N. as a "watershed moment" in Somalia's road to peace and stability, 215 Somali lawmakers were sworn in on Aug. 20, the day the mandate of Somalia's eight-year-old caretaker government expired. It also was the day a new president was to be selected, but those hopes were dashed by political bickering, seat-buying schemes and threats of violence.

Somalia's intricate clan politics and loyalties must be navigated in the selection of the country's next leaders. A clan that wins the post of speaker, for example, is not eligible to get the presidency. Somali elders are tasked with naming a full parliament, since a general election is impossible because of the country's chronic insecurity.

The current political process has been undemocratic, "with unprecedented levels of political interference, corruption and intimidation," according to the International Crisis Group.

It remains unclear when a new president will be sworn in. Nick Birnback, a spokesman for the U.N. mission to Somalia, said last week that this would happen later in August or in early September. But the International Crisis Group predicted that it would not be until October that a full government is seated. After the president is elected, he must appoint a prime minister who then assembles a Cabinet.

Somalia, which has lacked a stable government since 1991, has seen improved stability recently as government forces and African Union troops pushed the al-Shabab militants out of the capital Mogadishu in August 2011. Although there is the occasional terrorist attack, the city is returning to life.

Team building | So say your business is partner you go nuts with a ...

This opportunity comes the challenge of choosing the right people to work with. People can search where you build trusting relationships is important. Often, a good Alliance can later turn into a large partnership for a different project or business.

As one of the greatest things about in the business itself the flexibility is enables it, alliances, and work with other companies to offer a full range of services to our customers. Actually this can greatly increase our visibility and new customers, we can never have found that if we constantly moved our own small circles imagine.

So say your business is you partner drive you nuts

Starting a business with a partner is like any other relationship? with a twist. It can be quite expensive both financially and emotionally to walk away from the partnership. In addition the increased workload and possible loss of funding can cause stress, which which to deal with the energy no one has.

As in all relationships requires the ability, the balance of trade fair and just business practices maintain effort on both sides. Without balance, that relationship and your business could be in danger.

Manages the question then remains, how some people in partnerships and others struggle?

1. Establish clear limits: decide, who is doing what, when, where and how, and then you adhere to those limits. This can often be difficult, especially if the partner a family member or a friend. Some customers had clearly set great success in the construction of contracts, the boundaries. Keep not only the load in the balance, but also your feelings.

2. Clarify vs. confrontation: most of us avoid confrontation, but spend enough time with clarification. We might think that clarification is a need or requirement may be confrontation. A simple statement to clarify and to eliminate future misunderstandings. Clarification achieved two purposes. This eliminates the danger of mind reading, which leads to misunderstandings. Secondly, it keeps open the way of communication and honestly that is an integral part of a healthy partnership.

3. Effective communication: people feel respected, if they feel that they will be heard. Listening without interrupting, is a principle of active listening. Whether we choose as partners in a business or personal relationship, there are basic elements that must be present. Your partner should share similar, if not the same values on financial matters, work ethic, family responsibilities and objectives. Try to create a balance between knowledge and personality, in the selection of business partners. If an individual has the ability and willingness to learn, the training in the complexity of your company is a realistic expectation. On the contrary, if the individual who may be well educated, has a personality not in accordance with, the relationship to the failure is doomed. The essence of a personality cannot be changed despite some opinions. Although you can have chosen with care as a partner, unforeseen circumstances eventually can change your relationship. You cut your ties amicably as possible and continue with what you know on the best structure of your company. Remember to take into account borders, clarification and communication. Choose a person such as mind and personality, your strengths compliments. Willing to invest, to train the time if the personality is a match.

One of the keys to effective communication and conflict resolution is the understanding of us and how we think and also to understand, are also wired like other. Razer Taipan

Any lefty knows that this is a world made for the right-handed. From automobile gear-shifts to can-openers and scissors, it's tough to find a hands-on experience that's southpaw-friendly. This is especially true of gaming mice, where ergonomic features are emphasized for comfort over hours of play. Thankfully, the Razer Taipan ($79.99 direct) doesn't discriminate against the left-handed, thanks to an ambidextrous design that offers ergonomic comfort for either hand.

Design
The Taipan isn't a button-studded MMO mouse; rather, it's a basic gaming mouse for first-person shooters (FPS) and point-and-click games?think somewhere in between the Editors' Choice Gigabyte M8000Xtreme Mouse and the bare-bones SteelSeries Kinzu Optical Mouse . The Taipan is outfitted with nine total buttons: Right and Left, a clickable scroll wheel, sensitivity up, sensitivity down, and two pairs of programmable thumb buttons to either side of the mouse. One pair is positioned for right-handed users, the other for lefties. The scroll wheel glows green, and a matching accent lights up the Razer logo positioned under the palm. The scroll wheel is also textured.

The symmetrical design has a thumb contour on both sides of the mouse, making it ergonomic for either hand to use, unlike right-handed mice like the Roccat Savu . The hexagonal snake-skin texture of the rubber lining inside these two thumb contours provides both traction and comfort. The overall design is nice, but it's a little narrow, and sits just a bit too low for comfort, measuring 1.5 by 2.6 by 5.0 inches (HWD). A seven-foot braided USB cable gives you ample freedom of movement while resisting tangles, and the USB 2.0 connector provides power (no need for batteries) and is widely compatible.

While the Taipan will function as a plug and play device on both Windows (Windows 7, Vista, XP) and Mac (OS X 1.6-10.7) systems, you'll definitely want to download Razer's Synapse 2.0 software, which provides tools for tweaking the Taipan to your liking. An added bonus of using Synapse is the automatic syncing to Razer's cloud server, automatically downloading driver and firmware updates and letting you save your settings and port them to other Razer devices. Razer also covers the Taipan with a one-year warranty.

Performance
On the underside of the mouse you will find that the Taipan has not one, but two sensors. By pairing an optical sensor with a laser sensor, Razer has not only made the Taipan extremely accurate, the dual-sensor array actually calibrates itself to whatever surface you happen to be using your mouse on, even if you don't use a specialized gaming mat like the Razer Vespula .

When put through some simple play testing in Team Fortress 2 and Portal, the Taipan was smooth, responsive, and performed like a champ. On-the-fly DPI adjustments were smooth and easy. The only issue I had was that the thumb buttons on the side opposite my thumb protruded just a bit too much, irritating the inside of my ring finger. Since the Taipan has a symmetrical ambidextrous design, it's a problem that will irritate right- and left-handers alike.

All in all, the Razer Taipan is a solid performer, though it has a few small issues, like the irritating buttons and the slightly too-narrow and too-low build. The Editors' Choice Gigabyte M8000Xtreme Mouse offers a wider feature set and more comfortable use, but with the Taipan's solid performance and ambidextrous design, this is a basic gaming mouse that anyone can pick up.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Razer Taipan with several other gaming mice side by side.

CSN: Eagles' Hall of Fame RB Van Buren dies

? ? ?
Steve Van Buren was a rarity: a superstar with no ego. He was the greatest running back in Eagles history, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, but he carried himself like a regular guy.

He always seemed embarrassed and a little mystified when strangers approached him and asked for an autograph or a handshake.

?How do they know me?? he would ask.

The concept of fame eluded Van Buren. He did not understand that he was part of the city?s history, a monument not unlike the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall and for all Eagles fans, regardless of age, he was a symbol of everything the franchise once was and aspires to be again.

Van Buren, who died Thursday night at age 91 in Lancaster, Pa. (see story), was a humble man. In 1994, when the NFL selected its 75th anniversary team, Van Buren was in the backfield with Jim Brown, Gale Sayers and Walter Payton. Yet ask him about his career, as I often did, and he would say, ?I did OK? and leave it at that. He enjoyed talking about football, but not himself.

In retirement, most athletes surround themselves with photographs, trophies and game balls. Van Buren had none of that. After his wife Grace passed away, he moved into a tiny apartment in Northeast Philadelphia and the only photos on display were photos of his children and grandchildren. There was nothing that suggested he ever played football, much less excelled at it.

Van Buren gave away most of his memorabilia. A visitor would admire a particular piece, maybe a trophy or a team photo, and Van Buren would simply hand it to him. ?You like it?? he would say. ?Here, take it.? Friends said he did it all the time.

?I never cared about that stuff, just like I never cared about records,? Van Buren once said. ?The only thing that mattered to me was winning. If we won, I figured I did my job.

?Basically, I?m a shy person. I almost didn?t go to my Hall of Fame induction. My family made me go. Once I got there, I was glad. But I don?t like a lot of attention. I never did.?

When Wilbert Montgomery was closing in on Van Buren?s franchise record for rushing yards, the Eagles invited Van Buren to the game so he could take a bow and share in the moment. He declined. Instead, he stayed home and watched it on TV.

I called Van Buren the day Montgomery broke his record. He was babysitting two of his grandchildren as he watched the game. I asked if he was sorry to see his record fall. After all, it was on the books for almost 30 years.

?I was rooting for him to break it,? Van Buren said. ?It is about time somebody did it. I?m glad it was a kid like Wilbert. I think he?s the best runner in the NFL, better than (Tony) Dorsett. He does so many things well.?

I asked Van Buren how he would compare himself to Montgomery.

?Oh, he?s better than I was,? Van Buren said without hesitation.

Montgomery is the Eagles? all-time leading rusher with 6,538 yards. Van Buren is next with 5,860 yards. But Montgomery, while an outstanding player, wasn?t as good as Van Buren. Van Buren is the only Eagle to lead the league in rushing and he did it four times. He is the best by a wide margin, but he never saw it that way.

?This might sound odd, but I never thought I was that good,? Van Buren once said. ?It?s so long ago now, I don?t even think about it.?

Many former players are bitter about the huge salaries paid in today?s NFL. They resent the fact that a kid fresh out of college can get a million dollar signing bonus before ever stepping on the field. Van Buren wasn?t that way. He never earned more than $15,000 a year playing football, yet he was fine with that.

?That was a lot of money in those days,? he said. ?Times change.?

Humility was one of the reasons Van Buren?s teammates loved him. He always thought in terms of the team, not himself. When he was given gift certificates for free dinners or clothes, he gave them to his teammates. If a photographer came to practice to get a shot of Van Buren, he would ask several other players to get in the picture with him.

He always spoke about being part of a great Eagles team, a team that won back-to-back NFL championships in 1948 and ?49. Ask the other players and they agree it was a great team, but it was great mostly because of Van Buren. He was the best running back in the game at a time when running the ball was everything.

Bucko Kilroy played on those teams and he liked to tell a story about the day Van Buren showed up late for practice. Coach Greasy Neale was irritated and told Van Buren, ?It?s either you or me, one of us has to go.?

According to Kilroy, the players all chorused, ?So long, Greasy.?

I once asked Van Buren if that really happened. He smiled and nodded yes.

?Even Greasy laughed,? he said.

Van Buren never stopped loving the Eagles. He wore an Eagles cap every day. He watched every game on TV, although staying up for Monday night games became a struggle as he got older.

In December, some former Eagles went to the nursing home in Manheim where Van Buren was living to celebrate his 91st birthday. I tagged along. Van Buren?s eyes lit up when he was wheeled into the dining room and saw the familiar faces of Chuck Bednarik, Tommy McDonald, Pete Retzlaff and the rest.

While they were cutting the cake, Bednarik pointed at Van Buren and said: ?You were the greatest Eagle ever.? Van Buren pointed back as if to say, ?No, you were the greatest Eagle.?

He was being modest, as always.

When someone is injured or killed in a workplace accident here in Maryland, there are a variety of legal avenues to pursue compensation for lost wages, medical or funeral expenses, pain and suffering and more. Depending on the nature of the accident, the case may fall under workers' compensation, personal injury or wrongful death law.

The family of a bridge mechanic, who died while repairing one of Maryland's bridges, has recently filed a wrongful death suit against the man's employer. The man was urinating off of a bridge before he fell to his death, and his family has said that the man's employer's negligence caused this accident--because it failed to provide a basic jobsite necessity, toilets.

The man, 58, reportedly tragically fell through a large hole in the bridge, which was covered by an unsecured platform at the time.

When someone dies because of another party's negligence, his or her survivors are often able to recover compensation through a wrongful death action for a lost source of income, lost potential prospect of inheritance, funeral expenses and loss of consortium.

If a court decides that the man's employer was negligent by forcing workers to relieve themselves off the side of a bridge, the court will consider the victim's age and earning capacity as well as the financial circumstances of his family before issuing the award.

In almost all situations, employers must provide a restroom, in many cases these are portable toilets, for their employees. This is a very basic need and it may present a number of hazards when an employer fails to offer this. It will be interesting to learn the outcome of this case.
