Why the Pro Bowl is the Golden Globes of Sports

Tech tipsComputer Tricks

The Golden Globes nominations for Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp last year for The Tourist were pretty much the Hollywood Foreign Press Association?s way of saying it, ?F*ck it. We?re not faking it anymore. We just want stars to show up.? This year, the names changed but the trend remained the same. I mean c?mon, Glee and New Girl get nods but no love for shows like Parks and Recreation, Community, or Louie? The Globes? process consistently reeks of a popularity contest and some NFL fans might agree that some of the more recent Pro Bowl picks in high profile categories have the same stomach-turning stench.

Take for example this year?s QB picks. The top quarterbacks in the NFC and AFC were predictable: Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. Okay, I get that. Then there are the more questionable selections, like San Diego?s Phillip Rivers and New York?s Eli Manning. Phillip Rivers may have put up big yardage but his total TDS nearly equaled his total INTs. That?s a piss poor season, not a Pro Bowl season by my estimates. I mean were Rex Grossman and Blaine Gabbert already booked for that weekend?

Okay, so of course Rivers is not Gabbert bad but there are QBs like Andy Dalton, who actually has a shot to lead his team to the playoffs, that got snubbed. Dalton may not have the name recognition but he certainly pulled off a lot with a little as a rookie. And what about Matt Stafford? Sure he may not have the same globally recognized facial grimace as an Eli Manning, but as a healthy starter for his team, he?s leading the Lions to their first playoff game in more than a decade after putting up some jaw dropping numbers. Hell, even Cam Newton deserved some serious consideration given what he?s been able to pull off in his rookie season. It?s not his fault his defense sucks balls.

Let?s take a looksy at the tight end position. Antonio Gates over Aaron Hernandez? Clearly, these voters never had to play against Aaron Hernandez in fantasy football. And what about Giants? wide receiver Victor Cruz? He was on my fantasy team and his awesomeness in large part carried me to the playoffs. He made Eli shine on plenty of plays. If not for his skills, at least reward the man for his awesome touchdown dance.

Beyond that, I wouldn?t say the Panthers? Steve Smith had such an impressive season that he deserves a Pro Bowl selection. In fact, Steve Smith from a few years ago would punch current Steve Smith in the face over his fumbles and crucial drops. (?Current Steve Smith? would then likely shank ?Past Steve Smith?, because current Steve Smith is still pretty scary.)

Much like a Hollywood awards show, the Pro Bowl picks seems so very subjective. But unlike with acting, there are subjective considerations AND hardcore numbers available to voters to help them make their decisions. In the same way that nominating the dude from Dexter every year has just gotten tired, so has what seems like automatic pilot voting for certain Pro Bowl categories.

Perhaps this is why, much like the Golden Globes, the Pro Bowl has lost some of its luster. I don?t know anyone who sits through either broadcast anymore, very few people seem to take either seriously, and even fewer remember who won the honors the year before. Maybe the NFL and the HFPAA can join forces for a new NBC Prime Time Special, ?The Golden Bowl?, where NFL players and actors team up in a battle on the gridiron?wearing tuxes and couture gowns. At least then everyone would be in on the joke.

If you still care who made the Pro Bowl, you can check out a complete Pro Bowl List here.

Strong winds divert flights, spark NYC airport delays

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

NEW?YORK -- The skies above New York City were clogged with planes waiting to land in winds gusting up to 50 mph Tuesday night, forcing long delays at two of the three major metropolitan airports and causing some flights to be diverted to other cities.

National Weather Service meteorologist Adrienne Leptich said the delays occurred because the number of planes that can land each hour must be decreased in high winds, forcing some planes to circle the region or be diverted to other airports if fuel runs low.

"The winds were a little bit stronger than we anticipated," she said. "We're getting into the season now where we have stronger storms. It's not completely out of the ordinary that this would happen."

The Federal Aviation Administration reported at 10 p.m. ET that some arriving flights at Newark International Airport were delayed an average of 2 hours and 8 minutes while flights into LaGuardia Airport were delayed an average 1 hour and 34 minutes. Kennedy International Airport reported minor delays.

By early Wednesday, all three airports were reporting average delays for arrivals and departures of less than 15 minutes.

Daniel Kennedy said his 4:48 p.m. Delta flight operated by Shuttle America left Madison, Wis., bound for New York's LaGuardia Airport, only to be diverted to Albany, where passengers were kept on board while the plane was refueled. It did not land in New York until shortly before midnight.

"Our gate is occupied by another aircraft diverted from LaGuardia as well," one of the plane's pilots could be heard telling passengers as Kennedy spoke to The Associated Press while the plane was on the ground in Albany.

"They tell us we can't get up because we're sitting on an active taxiway," Kennedy said. Shortly afterward, a flight attendant announced that they could get up one at a time to use a restroom.

'People are behaving'
After landing in New York, Kennedy said the flight attendants had been helpful, passing out bottled water at one point to passengers who remained in good spirits. He said he wished there had been more communication from the pilots.

"I'm impressed by how well people are behaving," he said.

Chris Kelly Singley, a Delta spokeswoman based in Atlanta, said two LaGuardia-bound Delta aircraft were diverted to Boston Tuesday night "as a direct result of the winds we were seeing in the three New York airports."

She said the diversions are necessary when fuel starts to get low as planes circle while waiting for their turn to land.

A message left Tuesday with Shuttle America's parent company, Republic Airways, was not immediately returned.

Leptich said the space between planes must be increased in bad weather conditions. She had good news for those traveling in or out of New York City through New Year's, saying the next possibility of any kind of significant storm appeared to be at least eight days away.

Meanwhile, NBC New York reported that strong winds ripped off the roof and blew out the windows of a hangar at MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma. However, no injuries were reported.

The Associated Press, msnbc.com staff and NBC New York contributed to this report.

Syria: Army Withdraws Tanks From Homs After Days Of Attacks

BEIRUT ? After days of punishing assaults, Syria's army began withdrawing tanks from the restive city of Homs on Tuesday just as a team of Arab League observers was on its way to the central city, according to activists and an Arab official.

Opposition activist Mohammed Saleh said the heavy bombardment of Homs stopped Tuesday morning and tanks were seen pulling out of the streets. Another Homs-based activist said he saw armored vehicles leaving early Tuesday on a highway leading to the city of Palmyra to the east. He asked that his name not be made public for fear of retribution.

For days, military forces had pounded Homs with artillery despite agreeing to an Arab League plan to stop the bloodshed. The Arab monitoring mission is meant to ensure the government complies with the deal to halt the nine-month crackdown on dissent.

Opponents of President Bashar Assad, however, doubt that the Arab League can budge the autocratic leader at the head of one of the Middle East's most repressive regimes.

Syria's top opposition leader Burhan Ghalioun called Sunday for the League to bring the U.N. Security Council into the effort. The U.N. says more than 5,000 people have been killed since March in the political violence.

In Cairo, an official at the Arab League's operations room said the Sudanese head of the mission to Syria, Gen. Mohamed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi, was leading a team of at least 12 observers on their way to Homs Tuesday. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to journalists, gave no further details.

Homs, Syria's third largest city, has a population of 800,000 and is at the epicenter of the revolt against Assad, located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of the capital, Damascus. Many Syrians refer to Homs as the "Capital of the Revolution."

On Monday, security forces killed at least 42 people, most of them in Homs.

"Today is calm, unlike pervious days," Saleh said on Tuesday. "The shelling went on for days, but yesterday was terrible."

The Arab League plan agreed to by Assad last week requires the government to remove its security forces and heavy weapons from city streets, start talks with opposition leaders and allow human rights workers and journalists into the country. Before Tuesday's redeployment of at least some tanks, there had been no sign that Assad was implementing any of the terms, much less letting up on his brutal crackdown.

BC-FBN--Eliminated Eagles,1st Ld-Writethru, FBN

BC-FBN--Eliminated Eagles, 1st Ld-Writethru,610Eagles blew many chances this seasonAP Photo SLS117, PAAB103, CBS132, SLS105Eds: Updates. With AP Photos.By ROB MAADDIAP Pro Football Writer

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? For all those super expectations, all the preseason hype, all the big-name additions, the Philadelphia Eagles are left to ponder all that went wrong.

Despite their late-season surge ? a three-game winning streak ? the Eagles (7-8) aren't going to the playoffs. That's the reality for this Dream Team.

So before they begin looking ahead to next season, they're thinking about the 'what ifs?' One play could be the difference in several of the losses, especially because the Eagles blew five fourth-quarter leads.

"If we would have gotten into the playoffs, I feel we would have definitely done some damage," quarterback Michael Vick said after Saturday's 20-7 win at Dallas. "It's unfortunate that we didn't and that's the game of football. If you make some mistakes early and you get behind in the count in the win/loss column, you sell yourself short in the end and you're in the position that we are in. We're just happy that we are finishing strong. We have one more game to play and we're going to give it everything we've got."

Vick and his teammates wasted an opportunity to repeat as division champions in a mediocre NFC East that will crown a champion ? either the Cowboys or New York Giants ? with no more than nine wins.

The Eagles entered Saturday at 6-8 and still had a chance to win the division, but were eliminated when the Giants beat the New York Jets, rendering their game at Dallas meaningless.

"I've watched this team grow as the weeks have went on," Vick said. "The last three or four weeks, we've come together as a team. It's a family environment, a family atmosphere and that translates to winning. That's why you see a different team. I think we are well put together and well fit. We're playing together and that's what it's all about. But it takes time to build that chemistry, build that unity, that togetherness. Doing it now, it's exciting for me and there's not a place that I'd rather be each and every day."

When the Eagles went on a spending spree and brought in Nnamdi Asomugha, Jason Babin, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Cullen Jenkins, Steve Smith, Ronnie Brown and Vince Young to join a roster that already had a talented core of star players, expectations were elevated to perhaps unrealistic levels.

Even management declared this an all-or-nothing season in which nothing less than a Super Bowl victory would be considered a success. Now the Eagles are looking back and wondering how much they really needed those offseason minicamps and a full training camp.

"We are finishing strong, and are showing the fans and everybody else what the true Eagles could have been, what we could have been doing at the beginning of the season," Rodgers-Cromartie said. "It just took a while to get there. We take that into the offseason and don't look back."

It seemed the Eagles could be headed for major changes when they were 4-8. Fans wanted coach Andy Reid fired and it appeared offensive-line-coach-turned-defensive-coordinator Juan Castillo would lose his job.

But a strong finish could keep this coaching staff together for at least another season. Reid is missing the playoffs for just the fourth time in 13 years, so this is new territory for many of his players.

"This is an unfamiliar feeling, an unfamiliar sight," wide receiver DeSean Jackson said. "I've never really witnessed this. It's a reality check. Look in the mirror. Everybody has to check themselves. Hopefully, we can finish strong and come back in the offseason or next year, whenever we are all together, and really eliminate all the mistakes we had early on."

Egyptian political party rejects ?normalization? with Israel

JERUSALEM?(JTA) -- A radical Islamist party in Egypt that said it would respect the country's peace treaty with Israel has amended its statement to say it is against "normalization" between the two countries.

The Salafi Al-Nour party, which won up to 30 percent of the vote in the first two rounds of parliamentary elections in Egypt, reportedly said Sunday in a statement that the party will "stand firmly against normalization between the two countries in all forms, and are against ties with any entity that wants to harm the Egyptian identity."

Last week, a spokesman for the party announced in an interview with Israel's Army Radio that the party would respect all treaties signed by Egypt, including the 1979 peace treaty with Israel, though party leaders later clarified that the party is looking into the matter. The spokesman later told the Associated Press that he was not aware that he was talking to Army Radio.

He told the AP that the party supports changes to the peace agreement, including increasing the number of troops in the Sinai Peninsula, a number regulated by the treaty.

"We call for full Sinai rights for Egypt and for our brothers in Palestine and occupied lands, and we see this as directly related to the agreement," he told the AP.

The Salafi Al-Nour party finished second behind the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party; the Muslim Brotherhood refuses to negotiate with Israel.

Queen's Message to Focus on Family, Community Spirit

By Aparajita Das | Dec 24, 2011 02:28 AM EDT

The Queen is due to talk about family, friends and community spirit in her annual Christmas message.

This year's speech was recorded in Buckingham Palace, with the monarch wearing a red dress and photographs of her family in the background.

The carol "O Little Town of Bethlehem" performed by the students of St Joseph's Catholic Infants' School from south London and the Band of the Irish Guards will also feature in the broadcast.

The royal family will celebrate Christmas at Sandringham, Norfolk, the Queen's country retreat.

It is believed that the Queen has invited more than 25 close associates for the celebrations in the estate.?

But the Duke of Edinburgh is not likely to be present during the celebrations as he underwent an emergency heart surgery on Friday night. Prince Philip will most probably remain in the Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, during the celebrations.

This year two new people joined the royal family and are expected to be at the celebrations. Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge who married Prince William, and rugby player Mike Tindall, who married the Queen's eldest granddaughter Zara Philips early this year, are the latest additions to the royal family.

Kate Middleton has already arrived at Sandringham.

A Traditional Fare

The Queen, who is said to be particular about tradition, always insists that her guests arrive from the morning of December 23 onwards.

On Christmas eve, the royals will follow the German tradition of opening their presents before changing into black tie and evening gowns for a candlelight banquet.

On the Christmas morning, the family will attend the service at St Mary Magdalene, the church inside the estate. A family get-together with a traditional turkey lunch will follow.

The evening will be spent on playing games and watching?television, like any other typical British family. The Boxing Day will see the traditional fox hunt.

Here are some of the memorable moments from the royals' Christmas celebrations at Sandringham in the previous years:

Wave of bombings across Iraqi capital kills 60 (AP)

BAGHDAD ? A wave of at least 14 bombings ripped across Baghdad Thursday morning, killing at least 60 people in the worst violence in Iraq for months. The apparently coordinated attacks struck days after the last American forces left the country and in the midst of a major government crisis between Shiite and Sunni politicians that has sent sectarian tensions soaring.

The bombings may be linked more to the U.S. withdrawal than the political crisis, but all together, the developments heighten fears of a new round of Shiite-Sunni sectarian bloodshed like the one a few years back that pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. But the bombings bore all the hallmarks of al-Qaida's Sunni insurgents. Most appeared to hit Shiite neighborhoods, although some Sunni areas were also targeted. In all, 11 neighborhoods were hit by either car bombs, roadside blasts or sticky bombs attached to cars. There was at least one suicide bombing and the blasts went off over several hours.

The deadliest attack was in the Karrada neighborhood, where a suicide bomber driving an explosives-laden vehicle blew himself up outside the office of a government agency fighting corruption. Two police officers at the scene said the bomber was driving an ambulance and told guards that he needed to get to a nearby hospital. After the guards let him through, he drove to the building where he blew himself up, the officers said.

Sirens wailed as ambulances rushed to the scene and a large plume of smoke rose over the area. The blast left a crater about five yards (meters) wide in front of the five-story building, which was singed and blackened.

"I was sleeping in my bed when the explosion happened, said 12-year-old Hussain Abbas, who was standing nearby in his pajamas. "I jumped from my bed and rushed to my mom's lap. I told her I did not to go to school today. I'm terrified."

At least 25 people were killed and 62 injured in that attack, officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Figures gathered from Iraqi health and police officials across the city put the death toll at 60, and 160 injured. The spokesman for the Iraqi health ministry put the death toll at 57 and said at least 176 people were injured. But conflicting casualty figures are common in the aftermath of such widespread bombings.

For many Iraqis and the Americans who fought a nearly nine-year war in hopes of leaving behind a free and democratic country, the events of the past few days are the country's nightmare scenario. The fragile alliance of Sunnis and Shiites in the government is completely collapsing, large-scale violence with a high casualty toll has returned to the capital, and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is displaying an authoritarian streak and may be moving to grab the already limited power of the Sunnis.

Al-Maliki's Shiite-led government this week accused Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, the country's top Sunni political leader, of running a hit squad that targeted government officials five years ago, during the height of sectarian warfare. Authorities put out a warrant for his arrest.

Many Sunnis fear this is part of a wider campaign to go after Sunni political figures in general and shore up Shiite control across the country at a critical time when all American troops have left Iraq.

Because such a large-scale, coordinated attack likely took weeks to plan, and the political crisis erupted only few days ago, the violence was not likely a direct response to the tensions within the government. Also, al-Qaida opposed Sunni cooperation in the Shiite-dominated government in the first place and is not aligned with Sunni politicians.

The Sunni extremist group often attacks Shiites, who they believe are not true Muslims.

U.S. military officials worried about a resurgence of al-Qaida after their departure. The last American troops left Iraq at dawn Sunday.

Al-Qaida in Iraq is severely debilitated from its previous strength in the early years of the war, but it still has the capability to launch coordinated and deadly assaults from time to time.

The attacks ratchet up tensions at a time when many Iraqis are already deeply worried about security. The real test of whether sectarian warfare returns, however, will be whether Shiite militants are resurgent and return to the type of tit-for-tat attacks seen at the height of sectarian warfare in 2006-2007.

Iraqis are already used to horrific levels of violence, but many wondered when they would be able to enjoy some measure of security and stability after years of chaos.

"My baby was sleeping in her bed. Shards of glass have fallen on our heads. Her father hugged her and carried her. She is now scared in the next room," said one woman in western Baghdad who identified herself as Um Hanin. "All countries are stable. Why don't we have security and stability?"

While Baghdad and Iraq have gotten much safer over the years, explosions like Thursday's are still commonplace.

Al-Maliki's tactics are another source of concern, especially for Sunnis. He is also pushing for a vote of no-confidence against another Sunni politician, the deputy prime minister Saleh al-Mutlaq.

Ayad Allawi, who heads a Sunni-backed party called Iraqiya, laid the blame for Thursday's violence with the government. The Iraqiya coalition also includes al-Hashemi and al-Mutlaq, and Allawi has been one of al-Maliki's strongest critics. Allawi warned that violence would continue as long as people are left out of the political process.

"We have warned long ago that terrorism will continue ... against the Iraqi people unless the political landscape is corrected and the political process is corrected, and it becomes an inclusive political process and full blown non-sectarian institutions will be built in Iraq," Allawi told The Associated Press, speaking from neighboring Beirut. __

Ruling party to lead Guyana's first minority gov't (AP)

GEORGETOWN, Guyana ? Guyana's ruling party will head a minority government that will not control the South American country's parliament, election officials announced Thursday after three days of counting paper ballots.

Chief Elections Officer Gocool Boodhoo announced that the East Indian-dominated People's Progressive Party led by 61-year-old economist Donald Ramotar won the most seats in Monday's elections but fell short of an absolute majority.

The result is likely to mean turbulent political times for Guyana since opposition parties could control the 65-seat parliament if they are able to work together.

Ramotar's party won 32 seats, four less than it had in the last parliament. The opposition Partnership For National Unity has 26 seats, a gain of four, and the Alliance For Change holds seven, a gain of two.

It is the first minority government since Guyana achieved self-governance from Britain in 1953 and independence in 1966.

Analysts said that will require political compromises in a country largely divided along ethnic lines, between people of Indian and African descent.

The hung parliament "is the best thing to have happened to us as a nation as there are now checks to one race group dominating all the others," said Guyanese political analyst Christopher Ram. "It forces us to share power or could force good governance."

During the campaign, the Partnership For National Unity coalition, led by retired army commander David Granger, accused the previous government of racial discrimination, allying with drug traffickers and turning a blind eye to corruption.

After the results were announced Thursday, about 200 of the coalition's supporters marched from its headquarters toward the legislature chanting, "We want Granger." Another group of opposition demonstrators blew horns as police in riot gear looked on.

Opposition parties have alleged voting irregularities in various districts.

After the results were announced, Granger and Rupert Roopnarine, the Partnership For National Unity's candidate for prime minister, attended a meeting with officials of the People's Progressive Party and the Alliance for Change.

Roopnarine would only say that the various leaders agreed to meet soon with a "fixed agenda, perhaps next week."

Ramotar will be sworn in as president Saturday, replacing Bharrat Jagdeo, who served the two-term maximum set by Guyana's constitution.

Ramotar has pledged to continue Jagdeo's policies by safeguarding vital mining and agricultural sectors and improving education in Guyana, a nation of roughly 780,000 people on South America's northern shoulder bordered by the Caribbean, Venezuela, Brazil and Suriname. Its economy depends on the export of commodities such as gold, bauxite, sugar, rice, shrimp and timber.

Brandon Melchior: More Than Just Friends

Luke and I had been best friends for a couple of years when we faced a decision that many gay friends confront: whether to take our relationship to a romantic level. We soon learned that as a binational couple, we would face even greater challenges.

Luke was the first person I met when I moved to New York from Los Angeles in January 2007. He is South African, and I'm a sucker for a good accent. We clicked instantly. Rarely do I hang out with someone one on one and feel comfortable; if there is any lull in the conversation, I feel like it's my fault and my duty to fill it. But hanging out with Luke was effortless. Other friends drifted in and out of my life, but Luke was always there, and I could always talk to him. Our lives merged more and more over the first year and a half, despite my moves to that distant region called Brooklyn and our neighbor to the north, Harlem. His friends became my friends, and my friends became his. We went to movies and dinner in groups, but more often than not we were meeting in coffee shops and enjoying each other's company. It was so simple and so... easy.

We grew closer as we talked about everything, called each other out on our ridiculousness, shared our lives and revealed our imperfections with each other. When I came out of the closet, I had no clue how to form friendships with other gay men without making it seem like I was asking them on a date. Half of the time I wasn't sure myself. I've rarely been sure where I stand with people. And I've rarely known what I've been looking for. Despite this, my friendship with Luke never seemed to get bogged down with such self-doubt. Even when we seemed to run out of things to say, it was oddly comfortable. Our friendship became extremely valuable to me.

Luke would make a comment and hold my hand. In doing so, I noticed Luke had a way of holding my hand that seemed so loving and nurturing. I started looking at him differently, but I was afraid of our friendship changing, or, worse, ending.

The tension built when I was away on a work trip in Atlanta. I was texting back and forth with Luke, when our byte-sized conversation hit a lull. That dreadful lull. Then his text came. You know the one.

"Brandon, have you ever thought of us as more than friends?"

I shot back, "Really Luke?? Over text?? While I'm out of town???"

"LOL," he replied.

I was simply too afraid of our friendship changing, and I told him we would be better off if we did not put it at risk. I made it sound like a very logical and reasonable solution, but still, I was filled with fear. What if we made great friends, but we weren't compatible as boyfriends? Our friendship would be forever altered. And finally, what if it were true love? What then?

When I returned back to New York, things were different. Everything I was afraid of happening was happening. He would skip out on going to dinner with our group of friends, or he would leave early with other friends. He seemed distant. I had never experienced the kind of feelings that overwhelmed me when I sensed him slipping away. I felt a void in my life. I told my therapist and one of my closest friends about our text conversation and how afraid I was of things changing. My therapist said, "When's the last time you made a good decision based on fear?" I had no response. It was one of the most logical things I'd ever heard. I texted Luke a few days later.

"Have you ever thought of us as more than friends?"

We both LOL'd.

Our first kiss was on my 29th birthday. It was ridiculous how cinematic it was: the two of us desperately trying to get a moment away from our friends the night of my party, finally ducking around a corner as it started to rain. We pulled each other against the side of a building across the street from Sheridan Square and started to kiss. That was more than three years ago.

Our friendship had changed. And nothing collapsed. The ground didn't open up and swallow us whole. My fear subsided. It turned into a hope that I had never felt before, that sense when you meet someone you can imagine waking up next to and craving a day of doing everything or nothing as long as he is with you.

We already knew so much about each other. We'd seen all our different moods, unfiltered. He moved in within six months. We got a dog, a Dachshund named Andrew. We moved from Harlem to a great apartment in Greenwich Village. We were a family. We started talking about marriage less than a year into our relationship.

We wanted to wait until we could have a big wedding; neither Luke nor I is a man of half-measures. We soon realized it would be years before we would be able to afford the kind of wedding we wanted, but we didn't want that to stop us.

The day we got our rings, we sat at our dining room table, smiling, alternating glances between them and each other. Andrew was looking up at us, waiting patiently to be fed or played with. There was kind of a healthy blend of shock, fear and excitement between us that was palpable. These days two men marrying can be considered political activism as much as an expression of love and commitment. Neither of us thought that at this point in our lives we would have met the man we wanted to be with for the rest of our lives. For me, there was no question: my best friend made the perfect partner.

I got down on one knee, slipped the ring on Luke's finger and said, "Luke, will you marry me?"

Almost immediately I felt a knot in my stomach. Not because of the question or Luke's answer (he said yes). I felt like it wasn't real, because it wouldn't truly be official for all the world to know. It didn't feel equal. I felt like an imposter in a straight world's tradition and privilege. I shared these feelings with Luke, who assured me that our marriage was just as valid as any other marriage. This was going to be our marriage and our ceremony, he said. We were going to start our own traditions. We understood from the beginning that this decision would cement our commitment to each other. That was the easy part. I was dating my best friend.

For a gay child of divorced parents, a committed marriage can seem like a triumph of will as much as fate. If anyone could make it, I knew we could.

When the economy collapsed, I got laid off. Within a few months, I was able to find a new job, but Luke's business slowed down. So we were tight on money. Our dreams of having a big, gorgeous wedding seemed to be slipping further away. So we opted for the cheapest, er, most affordable wedding in history. With our $20 rings from the glamorous Canal Street, we caught a train up to Milford, Conn. ($50), obtained marriage licenses ($40), and caught a cab to our friend's house for the weekend ($10). During the ceremony, we smiled from ear to ear and didn't break eye contact while the Mayor of Milford read the gender-neutral wedding vows and Andrew sniffed around City Hall.

We spent the weekend at our friend's house and watched the movie Milk in honor of our wedding, which also happened to be gay pride weekend.

Our first year as a newly married couple has been phenomenal, though not always easy. We're moving through the same growing pains as every other healthy marriage. Communication, compassion and humility have gotten us through our difficult times, and will continue to do so as we grow together. We have replaced our Canal Street wedding rings with something more appropriate. But our first rings will always have the most sentimental value.

On our first anniversary, New York joined five other states and the District of Columbia in ending discrimination against lesbian and gay couples in marriage. We celebrated with thousands of other New Yorkers, knowing that other couples would no longer be forced to travel like refugees to Connecticut or other states to do what all other Americans take for granted. But winning marriage equality in New York and watching the euphoria on Sunday, July 24 as thousands of lesbian and gay couples married across New York state were a celebration of a job not yet completed. Marriage equality can never simply mean winning the right to marry in each state, as long as the federal government denies recognition of those marriages. Each of us, married and celebrating our love and this historic advance, remains unequal. Marriage inequality will continue until the ruinous and hateful era of DOMA is ended.

And that is how Luke and I decided to embark on a new chapter of our lives together. I will fight for my right to sponsor my husband for a "green card," a privilege heterosexual Americans take for granted. With President Obama's recent decision not to defend DOMA and signals from the Department of Homeland Security about protecting LGBT families from being torn apart by deportation, we believe that this is the time to challenge our exclusion from the family-based immigration system that otherwise works reasonably well to keep opposite-sex binational couples together.

We start here today by arguing our case in the court of public opinion. Recently, we joined Stop The Deportations: The DOMA Project, and I filed a petition for Luke as my spouse. We know that puts us in a potentially perilous position: unlike an opposite-sex couple, my petition will face the insurmountable hurdle of DOMA, and unlike all other spouses in our situation, Luke could face deportation if we are not ultimately successful. We do not want to be forced into exile, and we cannot imagine life apart. This means we might have no option but to fight this in the courts and in Congress, like so many thousands of gay binational couples who have raised the profile of this inhumane and cruel discrimination. Whatever the short-term challenges, we will not allow ourselves to be torn apart by my government.

For now, I'm determined not to let fears about our uncertain future dominate my thoughts. I am not worrying about being forced to leave our home and lives we've built in New York. I'm not thinking about saying goodbye to friends and family, or how we'd ever rebuild new lives for ourselves halfway across the world in South Africa. I cannot allow myself to think of what would happen if Luke were deported. Instead, I'm trying to channel the uncertainty into the sort of optimism I felt when President Obama was elected: that this is a country in which we judge others by the content of their character. We should not hold anyone back because of who they are or whom they love. And, most importantly for us, in the end, we must take on this battle. We will not bring about change by standing on the sidelines.

Can a nation's immigration laws recognize something as simple as true love? We think so. If change comes, Luke will truly be able to live his life to its fullest potential with his husband and best friend, which will make it all the more possible to take that honeymoon we have been dreaming of.

Verizon scores new spectrum from Comcast, Time Warner and Bright House for $3.6 billion (update)

Verizon
Verizon has a pretty serious head start in the LTE race. To make sure it stays at the front of the pack, Big Red has entered an agreement with SpectrumCo (a joint venture between Comcast, Time Warner and Bright House) that sees 122 AWS spectrum licenses transferred to the carrier for $3.6 billion and some commercial agreements. The deal will allow the companies to become authorized retailers for each others products, eventually giving the cable companies the ability to offer Verizon Wireless service as wholesalers. For its part, the House that Droid Built scores a boat load of new spectrum that may become crucial in expanding its network and ensuring that speeds don't drop off significantly as more customers transition to 4G. Check out the full PR after the break.

Update: Wondering how this impending love affair affects Comcast and Time Warner's existing deals reselling Clear's mobile broadband? Per CNET, not great, as the duo will gradually shift those using the WiMax provider to alternatives in the next six months.

Road to recovery in Afghanistan goes through the countryside

As NATO troops prepare to leave Afghanistan in 2014, donor countries must rethink their aid to that war-torn country. Edward Girardet, who has reported on Afghanistan for more than 30 years, writes that they must focus on rural areas, where most Afghans live.

When the West first intervened in Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11, experienced aid coordinators, journalists, and diplomats had some simple advice:

Don?t get carried away with wasteful military campaigns or a Sisyphean anti-narcotics drive. They contribute little to long-term peace. To help Afghanistan, focus instead on modest but doable development initiatives in the countryside, where nearly 80 percent of Afghans live.

This largely ignored advice still holds, as high-level delegations gather in Bonn, Germany, on Dec. 5 to consider the way forward in Afghanistan, which has suffered from more than three decades of war. It?s a critical time as NATO-led security forces seek to transition toward 2014, when most troops are expected to leave.

Western and Afghan leaders first met in this German town a decade ago to kick-start a proposed ?Marshall Plan? for the reconstruction of this largely impoverished mountainous and desert country.

And yet, at their peril, many nations involved in the ?Bonn process? often sought to impose their own agendas ? through arrogance or a poor understanding of the situation on the ground. These agendas largely failed to take into account the interests of Afghans.

They have led not only to a disastrous war but also a recovery effort with only limited impact. Afghanistan has reached ?a permanent condition of rottenness,? says Anders Fange, the respected former head of the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan.

The question now is whether the international community will have the imagination ? and commitment ? to remedy the situation. As it stands, the coalition death toll ? more than 2,800 ? is fast approaching the number of people who perished in 9/11, while insurgents are operating in areas where they never did before.

True, the donors have helped bring about improvements, such as schooling for 7 million children, one third of them girls. Another 7 million, however, have yet to benefit from education. In many areas, health care is far better than 10 years ago, but many Afghans still don?t have even basic health services.

Various initiatives, such as paved roads and 24-hour electricity, have enhanced life in Kabul and other cities, and urban women can study at university or work outside the home. More than a quarter of the country?s parliament now consists of women, one of the highest ratios in the world.

However, for the majority of Afghans, especially in rural areas where many suffer from malnutrition and hunger, there is enormous frustration, even anger. Many wonder where the billions of dollars of aid money have gone. In certain parts, change has been brought about by cross-border trade and private investment, not development support.

Washington has yet to recognize that by allowing US military interests to dictate policy for the past decade, it has heavily undermined the recovery process. Numerous Afghans regard NATO forces as the ?new occupation.? But they also fear the insurgents, who have infiltrated government ministries, including the army and police. Civilian casualties, the majority of them rebel-inflicted, are up compared to last year.

Three brings 3LiveShop to Denmark, offers webcam chat and heads-up product display (video)

Well, it appears that Three's call center agents in Denmark won't be able to wear pajamas into work anymore. Following the introduction of 3LiveShop in Sweden, the mobile carrier's other Scandinavian group is introducing this rather novel way of shopping for new phones to Danes. Properly situated consumers may now elect to participate in live video chats with Three employees, who manipulate product photos and information on a heads-up display for customer convenience. (We'd like to imagine this nice lady has placed the Galaxy S II and iPhone 4 into the "maybe" pile.) Thankfully, shoppers won't have to look presentable at all, as participating in two-way video conferences is entirely optional -- along with more traditional voice and chat methods. If you're curious to see a demo of the system in action, just check the video after the break.

[Thanks, Jonas]
