Windsor Entertainment Forum Brings Music To People's Ears ...

Miclords & Sauce Funky (photo by Natasha Francis)

After helping film-makers last year, the Windsor Entertainment forum (WEF) has its ears tuned to music.

A great success in 2011, WEF 2012 will focus on the recording industry this Saturday. Executives from the Entertainment Law Society (ELS) including Matthew McCarthy, President Debora Miller-Lichtenstein, Byron Pascoe and Avra Epstein will organize the event with video director/film-maker Gavin Michael Booth and Windsor music graduate/front-woman of Perpetuate, Kim McInnis.

All involved hope to give those attending the tools they?ll need to succeed in their careers.

?We consider there to be only 1 topic for the WEF, which has a variety of elements,? said 35-year-old coordinator, McCarthy. ??What are the best ways for an interested party to break into the music industry?? To that end, our speakers will cover their own area of expertise and relate their personal stories as to how they?ve achieved their own success.?

Covering a bit of everything for attendees, speakers will address many aspects of the industry. Time will also be reserved for bands and artists to network and market themselves, helping further their careers.

?As all of our speakers would no doubt agree,? said McCarthy. ?The ability to form business connections and market yourself is one of the biggest keys to success in this industry. We will try very hard to ensure that the WEF provides the chance for all attendees to expand their personal networks and develop valuable connections for the future.?

Speakers this year include musician Karl Wolf, entertainment lawyer Safwan Javed (who has worked for Wide Mouth Mason,) along with other musicians, producers, booking agents and executives.

Booth, who helped organize and spoke at last year?s forum, said there are more musicians in the area than film-makers. As a result, he feels this year?s event will fill a greater need and wants to help. While creating videos himself, Booth plans to speak about how they?re necessary for musicians as well.

?I will be focused on discussing the extreme importance of video and multimedia material in today?s social media climate,? he said. ?Artists need to understand that it doesn?t have to take a large budget to create innovative music videos and other fan-fun content such as podcasts, video blogs, tumblr pages, etc. All of this should be part of their weekly or monthly plans just like band practise and playing live shows are.?

Speaking of live shows, WEF will kick-off with a March 2 concert at the Dominion House (3140 Sandwich St.) Featuring five local bands and headlined by Miclords & Sauce Funky, tickets can be reserved for $5 by e-mailing musicwindsor@gmail.com: They?ll also be available for $7 at the venue.

As for speakers and networking, those interested can visit the Moot Court at the Windsor Faculty of Law building from 12-5 p.m. the following day. While admission is free, attendees are asked to RSVP by e-mailing musicwindsor@gmail.com before March 3.

McCarthy was also quick to stress that the forum wasn?t exclusive to musicians. He feels that it will be just as important for aspiring producers, label owners, lawyers and technicians. It?s targeting those starting their careers and more experienced professionals who need a boost. At the heart of it all however, is a passion for business and a desire to learn.

?The goal of the forum is to provide attendees with the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the music business,? said McCarthy. ?It?s to increase their possibility of making a career for themselves in this exciting industry.?

For more information, those interested can either visit WEF?s website or drop them an e-mail.

ALIENS ATTACK! (2.28.12) | Weekly World News

KANGEAN ISLAND -? Aliens from ?Planet Gootan have been spotted across the Indonsian Sea.?

WWN continues to follow the landing of three large spaceships from Planet Gootan ? that arrived on November 29th, 2011. ? Two ships landed in a field near Lijang, China and one ship landed in the Indonesian Sea near Kangean Island.

WWN has learned that ti was not just one ship that landed in the Indonesian sea, but there were three ships ? and 12 Gootan pods that landed in the sea. ?Over the last two weeks, the ships have been surfacing and flying g over Kangean Island and Bali.

The United Nations Panel on Extraterrestrials has sent a team to Bali to observe first hand the activities of the Gootans.

Some readers continue to be skeptical of the landings ? but WWN has been following the developments closely and is close contact with the United Nations and the Defense Department.

Sources inside the Defense Department say that the activities of the Gootans have many world leaders very concerned. ?It does appear that the Gootans are planning an attack on humans.

Dr. Susan Begley, one of the leaders of the U.N. Panel of Extraterrestrials, ?estimates that between ten thousand and thirty thousand Gootans are now on Earth. ?She believes that there are over 3,000 in the Indonesian Sea ? preparing for war.

Many citizens on the island of Bali have noticed the Gootan ships hovering above them. ?Locals have taken to wearing demon masks to scare off the Gootans.

Others are performing tribal dances to stop the Gootans from attacking Bali.

According to sources in Bali, there have numerous reports of strange apparitions, beings, moving through the island.

? BALI. ? Two old men, Wayan and Nyoman, ?saw three strange beings on the beach.? The beings stopped to look at them. ? Wayan said that the beings ?glowed? and stared at them. ?After a flash went off ? they disappeared.

? KANGEAN ISLAND. ?Many reports of a light above the island, that was similar to this:

Dr. John Malley, the leader of the U.N. Panel on Extraterrestrials is also In Bali ?monitoring the situation.? ?The Gootans are here are are getting closer to an attack. ?I would say that the attack will take place sometime in November or December of 2012. ?They are just ?observing? humans now.?

Dr. Malley went on to say that the United Nations is doing everything in its power to protect the citizens of earth from the Gootans. ? Dr. Johannes Bargad, a specialist in extraterrestrial medicine, is working on a vaccine that may keep the Gootans away ? but time is running out.

Why ?have the Gootans have come? ? ?we asked Dr. Begley. ?Well, some say they have come for our gold, or that they feel that humans are abusing the planet and want to take over, and others ?speculate that they are here to do research on humans?. but we will never know. ?We just have to take steps to protect our planet.?

As always, WWN will continue following this developing story?? and please report any Gootan sightings in the comments section. ?The mainstream media is covering up this story to avoid causing a worldwide panic, but WWN wants to keep readers informed.

How do the Oscar losers look?

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Imagine you're nominated for an Oscar and are there at the big show, nervous as can be. Praying you'll hear your name and then ... not you. Somebody else.

Could you hide your disappointment? Could you look thrilled, like you really, really like Sally Field and wanted her to win the whole time??Are you a good enough actor that?you can put the?"it's an honor to be nominated" look on your face, even at this moment of loss?

Not everyone can. Check out this great video gallery showing all dozens of past nominees at the time their award is called.

We'll save you some hardcore hunting and tell you Jessica Lange (middle of the page) looks?awfully unhappy?when Sally Field does in fact win in 1984. (Field won for "Places in the Heart" while Lange was nominated for "Country.")

Also, Sally Kirkland (first row) makes a very odd face before pasting on a smile, but let's assume she was checking her teeth for lipstick or something. (Cher won for "Moonstruck" in 1987, Kirkland was up for "Anna.")

And Meryl Streep is indeed the actress everyone says she is -- in addition to her literally leaping out of her chair with delight for Cher in 1987, she never looks angry the many (many) times she had to sit there and let someone else take home the golden trophy.

How do you think you'd react if you lost an Oscar? Tell us on Facebook.

The Celebrity Apprentice Contestant?s Introduce Their Charities (Videos)

It is Sunday and while I realize most of you will be watching the Oscars tonight, I also know many of you will be setting your DVR?s for The Celebrity Apprentice. I know I will certainly be checking out The Donald?s show once Hollywood?s biggest night is done. One of the reasons I like the NBC reality show so much is because of celebs are playing for a charity close to his or her heart. In light of that I thought it would be kind of cool to see what charity each famous person was playing for, which is why I have a video of each contestant telling us about his or her charity. ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Kyrie Irving kicked off the aerial display with an alley-oop to Paul George. Cleveland's rookie point guard then showed off his long-range shooting skills.

It was so much fun that Irving wasn't too upset that all those 3-pointers came in a meaningless game.

Irving was a perfect 8 for 8 from beyond the arc and finished with 34 points, helping Team Chuck beat Team Shaq 146-133 in the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday.

Indiana's George added 23 points but the night belonged to Irving, who picked up where another No. 1 overall pick left off in the NBA's showcase game for its first- and second-year players. Wizards point guard John Wall earned MVP honors last season when he was a rookie.

Irving said he couldn't remember being so hot from the field.

"No, it's never occurred in my career," he said. "You know, it's kind of unfortunate that it comes in the All-Star game. These stats don't carry over into the season. But at the end of the day, it was still fun to get out there with those talented guys. So it was a great experience."

Cleveland's Tristan Thompson scored 20 points to lead Team Shaq. New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin only had two points.

This year's Rising Stars Challenge had a different format, with the rookie and second-year players mixed together on teams for the first time. The league also inserted a little more name recognition with former stars Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley serving as general managers and drafting the teams.

While the teams had a different look, there was once again no real defensive effort and plenty of fan-pleasing fast breaks and flashy play.

"It's what All-Star games are, there's not a lot of defense," Team Chuck co-head coach Maurice Cheeks said.

Lin had a relatively quiet night. His biggest highlight came early in the second half when he took a pass from Minnesota star Ricky Rubio and drove it underneath for a reverse layup.

He played just nine minutes before heading to the bench in the second half, and instead mostly yielded to the more high-flying players on his team. He took just four shots.

Landry Fields, who plays with Lin on the Knicks, remained his biggest fan, holding a "Linsanity" Time magazine cover featuring him.

"It was fun to be out there with all these guys, and this guy right here (pointing to magazine) did his thing," Fields said. "Short minutes, but he still did his thing."

Irving got the game off to a rousing start with the pass to George, and Rubio turned routine passes to his Shaq teammates into behind-the-back and between-the-leg looks.

It was part of an acrobatic early tone that was fast-paced and allowed the next generation of stars to showcase open-court and aerial skills that have already made many of them fan favorites on their respective teams.

Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin had several highlights while playing for Team Shaq, catching several alley-oops and even throwing his own pass off the glass and catching it for a dunk.

"There were a lot of dunks," Team Shaq co-head coach Ron Adams said. "I think the guys had fun. I hope we didn't set a Guinness Book of World Records record for dunks given, but it was a fun game. Interesting game."

These Simple Skin Care Suggestions Will Help you Have the ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Given that the Fountain of Youth hasn?t been found yet it?s safe to say you might need a few easy skin care tips to keep your vibrant glow. Don?t you wish you can make time come to a halt ? at least the impact it has on your skin? That doesn?t suggest all hope is lost. There are ways that can impede the signs of age on skin. Observe these simple measures and see what a difference they make for your skin.

Guard Your Skin from Sun Exposure The sun is brutal on skin. There?s no denying that. Nearly every sign or symptom of aging skin may be blamed on or associated with sun exposure. You have to do more than just refrain from venturing outside whenever possible though. Wearing the right amount of sunscreen on all totally exposed skin: face, legs, hands, arms, neck, and chest, is another important step.

Be sure to put on hats with wide brims, shirts with long sleeves, and long pants or skirts each time you?re outside also. You?ll find a wide range of fabrics that are cool to wear while still offering plenty of protection.

Consume foods that are packed with antioxidants to protect the skin from within. A well-rounded diet in which a lot of antioxidants are ingested gives the body the tools it needs to combat the damage the sun has already caused.

Timing Your Skin Care Regimen Right ? Easy Skin Care Tips to Remember Timing is very important with your skin care regime just as it is with many other things in life. In particular, it?s vital that you moisturize your face right after washing it. The purpose of moisturizers is not to generate or add fluids to the skin. They try to lock the moisture already in your skin. When your skin is already moist, these products are better able to do the job effectively. Remember that this goes well outside facial moisturizers and must be remembered for all moisturization activities.

Certain parts of skin care are specially designed as ?night time? treatments. For starters, you must wash your face prior to calling it a night. If you don?t remove the dirt and debris found on your face before calling it a night there?s no telling what sort of damaging effect it will have on your skin. Every night when you go to sleep, your skin is actively working to fix itself. Provide all the help it needs by keeping the cleansing, toning, and moisturizing as important parts of your nighttime skin care regimen. This lets you literally put your best face forward when you wake each day.

If you?re set on taking good care of your skin then these very simple skin care tips are sure to get you off to an excellent start.

Invasive plant protects Australian lizards from invasive toad: Study

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

An invasive plant may have saved an iconic Australian lizard species from death at the hands of toxic cane toads, according to research published in the March issue of The American Naturalist. It's an interesting case of one invasive species preparing local predators for the arrival of another, says Richard Shine, a biologist at the University of Sydney who led the research.

Cane toads were introduced in Australia in the 1930s to control beetles that destroy sugar cane crops, but the toads quickly became an ecological disaster of their own. They produce toxins called bufadienolides, which have proven deadly to many native Australian species that feed on frogs and toads.

Bluetongue lizards are one of the vulnerable species, and their numbers began to shrink significantly after the toads arrived in northern Australia. But there's reason to believe that bluetongue populations elsewhere Australia will fare better as the toads spread across the continent.

"Our study was stimulated by a puzzling observation that arose during research on the ecological impacts of invasive cane toads ? in Australia," Shine and his colleagues write. "Some lizard populations were vulnerable to bufotoxins whereas others were not?and the populations with high tolerance to bufotoxins included some that had never been exposed to toads."

Why would these populations have evolved a tolerance to the toad toxin when no toads were present?

The answer, according to Shine and his colleagues, is likely an invasive plant species known as mother-of-millions, which happens to produce a toxin that's virtually identical to that of the cane toad. After it was imported from Madagascar as a decorative plant some 70 years ago, mother-of-millions has since run amok in parts of Queensland and New South Whales and become part of the diet for local bluetongues.

Shine and his colleagues collected bluetongues from places with and without mother-of-millions, and injected each of them with a tiny amount of cane toad toxin. They found that toads from places where mother-of-millions is common had less of a reaction than those from places where it was absent. The results suggest that the plant drove strong selection for lizards that could tolerate bufotoxins?a remarkable example of evolution over a relatively short period of some 20 to 40 generations of lizards.

"Now it appears we have a population of eastern bluetongue lizards that are able to defend themselves well against cane toads?even though they've never actually met one?whereas the devastation of the cane toads on the northwestern lizard population continues," Shine said. "Eating this plant has pre-adapted the eastern blueys against cane toad poisons."

The Australian government has spent millions trying to deal with the toads and mitigate their ecological impact, but Shine's work suggests the eastern bluetongues might not need much help.

"We're now able to focus our conservation dollars on those populations that can't care for themselves," he said.

Clear (for iPhone)

Beautiful, and taking advantage of the iPhone's touch capabilities to their full potential, the to-do list app, Clear for iPhone (99 cents), should be a work of wonder. And in design, it is. However, in usability, as a list-making application, it fails miserably. Clear clearly has no regard for what people actually do with mobile organization apps. Clear attempted, admirably, to simplify list making to the same extreme that Twitter sought to simplify communication, with character restrictions, limited functionality, tight features, but most of all, utter simplicity. Twitter has managed to pull this off, but Clear has not. There is precisely one type of person who should spend 99 cents on this app, and that is an iPhone app developer who surely could learn much from Clear's thoughtful interactive design.

Feature Failure
A good to-do list app requires, at the least, due dates and the ability to add notes. Those are characteristics you can easily find in any list making app, from Remember the Milk, to Awesome Note + Todo , to Weave. They're even in iOS 5's own free and included Reminders app. Beyond that core functionality, to-do lists can and should vary to meet the needs of different people. Reminders includes a geolocation function so that you can remind yourself to do something when you're in a particular place, like pick up your dry cleaning when you're in the same shopping plaza as your dry cleaner. Weave's niche is that it builds in the ability to manage to-do in terms of projects rather than single events. Remember the Milk and Reminders work with Siri on iPhone 4S. Some apps synchronize with other tools you might use like a Google Calendar or Evernote, but the point is they offer some features that cater to different kinds of users.

The problem with Clear is that it caters to no one, save those dazzled by interactive design with little substance behind it, because it has no features. The little functionality it does offer is so simplified you cannot do anything with it.

The name of any to-do item is limited to 28 characters. If you type more than 28 characters, the iPhone dings and vibrates, the app's way of hollering "Limit exceeded!" As much as I tried to work within these restrictions, my normal daily tasks simply cannot be described with accuracy in accurate in that limited space. I could shorthanded it if the item further opened to a notes field, but it doesn't. Twenty-eight characters is all you get. It is not enough for me, and I cannot imagine anyone else whose to-do lists are so simple that this app would benefit him or her in any way.

Design Genius
No one can reasonably argue that clear is ugly, backward, or unusable. Just the opposite: Clear's designers could win awards handily for the skill with which its interface was crafted. In terms of design, it is on par with Flipboard , an iPad app that wowed users for leveraging the tablet's touch capabilities. When ported to the iPhone, Flipboard remarkably lived up to its well-earned reputation despite the smaller screen. Both Flipboard and Clear are apps you want to touch. Play with them for even a few seconds, and they draw you in.

Upon installing Clear and launching it for the first time, the user is walked through the app via a series of tutorial screens that in themselves speak to the app's conscientious design choices. You're persuaded to try swiping, dragging, pinching, and tapping the screen before you know it. By the time you reach the actual app, there's no question how to use it.

What's so creative about the design? For starters there are no buttons to speak of, no navigation menu, no settings icons, not even a share button. You interact with the app exclusively through finger gestures. Swipe long to switch between different lists and the menu. Create a to-do item in one of three ways: pull down gently from above an existing list, tap gently below a list, or use two fingers to pull apart the two items between which you want to insert a new one.

Color demarcates priority. In the default theme, heat map, red is at the top to show the highest priority items while successive shades of orange and yellow trickle down to indicate less importance. Other themes, available in a settings menu that you can access through a couple of long swipes, use the same principle but with different colors.

Clearly Not
If you develop apps for a living or as part of your business, absolutely spend one dollar on the iPhone app Clear because there are a lot of design tricks you can learn (or steal) from it, including in its startup screens. The average person, however, likely will not find in Clear enough substance behind the app's gorgeous veneer and interactivity.

? Gene Morey: 1948 Graduate; teacher at junior high and middle school for 22 years; community leader, on Windsor Tree Board since 1977; continues to serve the athletic department at various events.

According to Booster Club board member and Hall of Fame chairwoman Nancy Hardy, the Windsor High School Hall of Fame committee selected the 2012 finalists from a list of nominations.

?All of our finalists had valued participation in the growth of Windsor athletics in some form,? Hardy said. ?They set the benchmark for involvement, high academic standards and community involvement.?

Sponsored by the Windsor High School Athletic Booster Club, Hardy said the mission for the Hall of Fame is to recognize athletes, coaches and contributors who have made a substantial positive impact on the athletic program at Windsor High School.

Categories include: Athlete (must be a WHS graduate and out of high school a minimum of five years; coach (must no longer be coaching in the Windsor High School system; administrator/team/community member (selections based on committee discussion); Legacy Award administrator/contributor (may still be involved in the same or similar capacity).

The selections were based on what the nominee did as a Windsor High School athlete, coach or contributor, and the must have been in good academic and athletic standing while at Windsor High School. The selection may also include athletic activities, accomplishments and contributions after WHS. The selection committee is made up of people who are familiar with Windsor High School athletic history.

?This is the first year of the program and the Booster Club is excited about bridging the gap between WHS past and future,? Hardy said. ?We look for this program to not only honor those that have laid the groundwork for Windsor athletics, the foundation, if you will ... but for it to serve as a benchmark for current athletes to set their sights on as an student-athlete, citizen, and valuable, giving and active community member of Windsor.?

Hardy said the Hall of Fame inductees are chosen on more than what they did for Windsor athletics.

?It is crucial to the selection committee that each individual selected represents a standard above and beyond the accomplishments just in the athletic arena,? Hardy said. ?While athletic success obviously strengthens their selection, their citizenship is first and foremost considered as well as academic value and post high school community involvement. With that vision, the Hall of Fame committee found a simple framework to help guide the selection for the first class into the Hall of Fame.?

Hardy said the committee worked off of a list of 12 nominations, all coming from long-time community members and current high school administration and coaching staff.

?This list was narrowed down to the final seven based on filling the positions for each category potentially available for nomination and induction,? Hardy said.

Hardy said a limited number of tickets will be available soon to the public for the social gathering, silent auction and induction ceremony. Tickets are $15 and those interested in attending the event can reserve tickets by calling Hardy at (970) 691-2020 or by email at nancyhardy@q.com. Checks should be made out to WHS Booster Club. She said the tickets will go fast. Hardy said Myers and former Windsor and CSU star football player Nate Kvamme will serve as the masters of ceremony for the event.

Hardy said the Hall of Fame recipients will also be highlighted in a museum display in the fall. She said the Windsor Museum and WHS Booster Club will be also partnering to present ?The History of Windsor Athletics? in the near future.

These mobile apps for the Oscars are worthy of the red carpet (Appolicious)

The Academy Awards are upon us, and increasingly we are using apps designed for small screens to enjoy movies made for the big screen. Whether you are looking to learn more about all the nominees through videos and biographies, like to dish about what your favorite actress and actor is wearing on the red carpet, or want to bet on winners with friends, we have some mobile apps recommendations for you.

Here are our five nominees for the best Oscars apps to download right away.

Oscars (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch: Free)

The official app from ABC and Academy of Motion Picture Arts is also the best if you own one of Apple?s iDevices. In addition to showcasing trailers, nominee backstories, and host Billy Crystal?s greatest past performances, this app gives users a backstage pass to the biggest entertainment gala of the year. Watch live feeds from behind the curtain, and pretend you?re in the control room to choose which cameras to view. The app also gathers all the Oscars news and buzz, and the most notable tweets. You can also use the ?My Picks? ballot to share your predictions with friends ahead of time. This app is especially useful if you like to use the ?second screen? of an iPad in the living room, as its content complements well what you are seeing on the television set.

For several years now, the best ?pre-game? show for the Oscars has aired on the E! Entertainment Network. The official Live From the Red Carpet app is ready for prime time this year with a new and improved look and feel. Watch hosts Giuliana Rancic and Ryan Seacrest interview the stars and get an early look at all their outstanding (or outlandish) outfits. The ?Live Event? feature in the app showcases tweets from the hosts and notable celebrities. The app also includes related news and E!?s famous GlamCam 360.

Didn?t get an invitation to Vanity Fair magazine?s famous Oscar?s after-party? Well, the next best thing is to download the Vanity Fair Hollywood app and pretend you are part of the Academy. This app lets you be the judge of which nominees should win and which ones should save their speeches for next year. The app also includes picks from Vanity Fair editors, and showcases who your friends from Facebook and Twitter are voting for leaderboard-style.

It doesn?t have to be awards season to enjoy this must-have application. IMDb, which provides trailers and very detailed information about virtually any movie, television show, actor or crew member around, has multiple uses during the Academy Awards. Download the app to watch clips of the nominees and find out which movies are worth checking out at the theater or via rental. Or, for the contrarians among us, IMDb is a great resource to tap into worthy film titles that didn?t get the love from Academy voters. Either way, IMDb will keep you entertained and informed.

Anyone needing to satiate a pool fix (for friendly wagering among friends, of course) during the time of year between the Super Bowl and March Madness can always rely on the Academy Awards. Awards Hero is a nice tool to create, organize and promote pools, and the Oscars edition is beautifully done. The app also includes a nice section that provides historical information for past winners and nominees.

(AP) ? Cheering as loudly as any movie audience, Hollywood and the Obama administration on Saturday hailed China's agreement to reduce barriers that have kept U.S.-made films out of the booming Chinese market.

Vice President Joe Biden called it a "breakthrough," and said the accord will "make it easier than ever before for U.S. studios and independent filmmakers to reach the fast-growing Chinese audience." He added that it will support "thousands of American jobs in and around the film industry."

The agreement was announced Friday during a California visit by Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, with Biden serving as host.

Gaining entrance to China's movie market has long been atop Hollywood's wish list, and the industry's chief lobby group, the Motion Picture Association of America, said the "landmark" deal will significantly boost U.S. exports to China overall.

It's also a rare bright spot in a trade relationship that's been a major battleground. The administration has repeatedly pressed Beijing to be more open to U.S. exports ? especially by letting China's currency rise ? and do more to prevent piracy of movies and other intellectual property.

U.S. officials first complained to the World Trade Organization in 2007 about film import restrictions, and the WTO ruled in Washington's favor two years later.

Under the accord, U.S. filmmakers will be given new opportunities to distribute their films outside China's state-run movie monopoly, will have better commercial terms for 3-D and other large-format films, and will reap a bigger share of the profit for films that are distributed by Chinese companies.

The market in question has been growing rapidly. Box office receipts last year topped $2 billion, U.S. officials said.

Chris Dodd, the association's CEO, who visited Shanghai last June to press Hollywood's case, said Friday's agreement "will return a much better share of the box office revenues to U.S studios, revising a two-decade-old formula that kept those revenues woefully under normal commercial terms." He estimated that Chinese audiences would see 50 percent more U.S. films.

Disney CEO Robert Iger added that the agreement is a "significant opportunity" in the world's most populous nation.

Gecko feet inspire amazing glue that can hold 700 pounds on smooth wall

ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? For years, biologists have been amazed by the power of gecko feet, which let these 5-ounce lizards produce an adhesive force roughly equivalent to carrying nine pounds up a wall without slipping. Now, a team of polymer scientists and a biologist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have discovered exactly how the gecko does it, leading them to invent "Geckskin," a device that can hold 700 pounds on a smooth wall.

Doctoral candidate Michael Bartlett in Alfred Crosby's polymer science and engineering lab at UMass Amherst is the lead author of their article describing the discovery in the current online issue of Advanced Materials. The group includes biologist Duncan Irschick, a functional morphologist who has studied the gecko's climbing and clinging abilities for over 20 years. Geckos are equally at home on vertical, slanted, even backward-tilting surfaces.

"Amazingly, gecko feet can be applied and disengaged with ease, and with no sticky residue remaining on the surface," Irschick says. These properties, high-capacity, reversibility and dry adhesion offer a tantalizing possibility for synthetic materials that can easily attach and detach heavy everyday objects such as televisions or computers to walls, as well as medical and industrial applications, among others, he and Crosby say.

This combination of properties at these scales has never been achieved before, the authors point out. Crosby says, "Our Geckskin device is about 16 inches square, about the size of an index card, and can hold a maximum force of about 700 pounds while adhering to a smooth surface such as glass."

Beyond its impressive sticking ability, the device can be released with negligible effort and reused many times with no loss of effectiveness. For example, it can be used to stick a 42-inch television to a wall, released with a gentle tug and restuck to another surface as many times as needed, leaving no residue.

Previous efforts to synthesize the tremendous adhesive power of gecko feet and pads were based on the qualities of microscopic hairs on their toes called setae, but efforts to translate them to larger scales were unsuccessful, in part because the complexity of the entire gecko foot was not taken into account. As Irschick explains, a gecko's foot has several interacting elements, including tendons, bones and skin, that work together to produce easily reversible adhesion.

Now he, Bartlett, Crosby and the rest of the UMass Amherst team have unlocked the simple yet elegant secret of how it's done, to create a device that can handle excessively large weights. Geckskin and its supporting theory demonstrate that setae are not required for gecko-like performance, Crosby points out. "It's a concept that has not been considered in other design strategies and one that may open up new research avenues in gecko-like adhesion in the future."

The key innovation by Bartlett and colleagues was to create an integrated adhesive with a soft pad woven into a stiff fabric, which allows the pad to "drape" over a surface to maximize contact. Further, as in natural gecko feet, the skin is woven into a synthetic "tendon," yielding a design that plays a key role in maintaining stiffness and rotational freedom, the researchers explain.

Importantly, the Geckskin's adhesive pad uses simple everyday materials such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which holds promise for developing an inexpensive, strong and durable dry adhesive.

The UMass Amherst researchers are continuing to improve their Geckskin design by drawing on lessons from the evolution of gecko feet, which show remarkable variation in anatomy. "Our design for Geckskin shows the true integrative power of evolution for inspiring synthetic design that can ultimately aid humans in many ways," says Irschick.

The work was supported by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) through a subcontract to Draper Laboratories, plus UMass Amherst research funds.
