Are the Colorado wildfires the biggest in US history? (+video)

The Waldo Canyon Fire has been declared the worst in Colorado state history, but it is small compared to the fires in the 19th century that scorched millions of acres.

The Waldo Canyon Fire has been declared the worst in Colorado state history. With its flames still raging out of control, it has destroyed 346 homes in Colorado Springs, killed at least one person and burned an estimated 18,500 acres of land thus far. Meanwhile, the High Park Fire is charring pine forests in nearby Fort Collins.?

(June 30)

But how do the Colorado wildfires compare to history's biggest blazes?

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, huge uncontrolled wildfires periodically arose that destroyed millions of U.S. acres, according to the National Park Service (NPS). In 1825, the Great Miramichi Fire burned 3 million acres in Maine and New Brunswick and killed at least 160 people. Two decades later, Oregon's Great Fire of 1845 blazed for weeks and downed 1.5 million acres of old-growth timber.

More than 1 million acres were turned to ash again in Oregon in 1865, in South Carolina in 1898, in Idaho and Montana in 1910 and in Minnesota in 1918.

But the fieriest day in U.S. history was Oct. 8, 1871. Flames engulfed the Midwest: The Peshtigo wildfire burned 3.78 million acres of Wisconsin and Michigan forest and killed an estimated 1,500 people, according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). Meanwhile, a second Michigan forest fire raged, burning 1.2 million acres along with untold numbers of lumberjacks, and across Lake Michigan, the Great Chicago Fire burned the Windy City to the ground; 250 people perished and a record 17,400 structures were destroyed. [Video: The Speed of Wildfire]

The Midwest had faced a hot, dry summer that year, and the multiple blazes were probably triggered by a front that moved in over Lake Michigan and spread the flames of small land-clearing fires. Alternatively, it has been speculated that fragments from a comet impact sparked the simultaneous wildfires.

Despite modern firefighting efforts, there have also been several enormous wildfires in recent history that dwarf the destructiveness of the High Park and Waldo Canyon Fires.

In 2002, the Rodeo-Chediski Fire, which began near Cibique, Ariz., burned more than 462,000 acres, caused the evacuation of more than 8,000 people, destroyed 426 residences and cost approximately $153 million, according to NPS records ? making it the largest fire in Arizona history. That year, more than 88,000 U.S. fires cumulatively burned roughly 7 million acres.

Then in 2004, wildfires in Alaska alone burned more than 6.38 million acres, according to the NIFC. And in 2006, some 907,000 acres went up in flames in the Texas panhandle near Amarillo, killing 12.

New marker, new target in Ewing's sarcoma

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? Ewing's sarcoma is a bone cancer commonly diagnosed in about 250 U.S. teenagers per year. If early chemotherapy is effective, improvement can be durable. But for children and teens who respond poorly to a first attempt at chemotherapy or if the disease spreads, long-term survival can be less than 10 percent.

A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published this week in the journal Molecular Cancer Research shows an important difference that may explain why some respond and some don't: the existence of high levels of the protein EYA3.

"First, levels of EYA3 could be a tool in offering an accurate prognosis and choosing how aggressively to treat Ewing's Sarcoma, and second we hope that by lowering levels of EYA3, we could help increase the effectiveness of existing therapies for Ewing's sarcoma," says Tyler Robin, PhD, first author of the recent paper.

Researchers recently defined the role of EYA3 as a DNA repair molecule and Tyler showed that EYA3 has a similar repair role in Ewing's sarcoma -- high levels of EYA3 help the tissue survive during and recover after treatment with chemotherapy. Importantly, when Robin knocked down EYA3 in Ewing's sarcoma cells, they became sensitized tochemotherapy.

"The genetic mutation that creates Ewing's sarcoma also leads to high levels of EYA3," says Heide Ford, PhD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center and associate professor in the CU School of Medicine department of ob/gyn, and the paper's senior author.

The mutation Ford refers to and that creates Ewing's sarcoma is the fusion of a gene from chromosome 22 to a gene in chromosome 11. Known as a EWS/FLI translocation, this mutation turns off a cell's ability to make another, intermediate step known as miR-708 -- a molecule that helps to decide what parts of the genome do and don't get read and manufactured into proteins. In healthy tissue, miR-708 turns off the production of EYA3; in Ewing's sarcoma, miR-708 is down and so EYA3 is up.

"Our next step is to test small molecule inhibitors against EYA3 to determine which inhibitors best sensitize Ewing's sarcomas to chemotherapy," says Ford.

Robin and Ford hope that recognizing EYA3 levels, reducing these levels directly, or intervening in the steps that lead to its over-production will help predict outcomes, make decisions about existing treatments, and eventually lead to new treatments for Ewing's sarcoma.

India s Oil exploration spends under NELP rises 96% in 2006 11

Last Updated : 28 June 2012 at 16:50 IST Source :Commodity Online

NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): India?s Oil exploration spending under New Exploration and Licensing Policy (NELP) I-VIII has risen 96% from 2006-2011, according to Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

According to Oil Ministry data, US 1168.53 mn was spent in 2006-07 while in 2010-11, it has risen to US$ 2293.93 mn.

The Ministry termed as ?factually inaccurate? reports in the media that there has been a drastic drop in exploration spending in NELP blocks from US $ bn in 2007 to US$4.7 mn in 2011.

NELP-IX has been awarded recently and committed investment in the awarded blocks is about US$582.29 million. Investment level will increase with further development of discoveries.

The Ministry clarified that: The timelines are specified in the respective Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) for various stages from exploration, discovery to development under New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP). As per PSC, Contractor takes about 7 years for exploration. The development of offshore discoveries in shallow water takes about 4 to 5 years, while in deepwater the average time taken for development of discoveries may be about 9 to 10 years. The Contractor is required to adhere to the timelines specified in PSC and hence there exists a certain time gap, especially in case of development of offshore and deepwater discoveries, from discovery to development.

Several other factors, such as geographical location, geological and reservoir parameters, Contractor?s development strategy and business model, availability of infrastructure, prevailing prices of oil and gas etc. influence the timeline for development of oil/gas discoveries. Consequently, expenditure is incurred by the Contractor, keeping in view the various stages as outlined above, the clarification added.

Video Game Reviews ? Tips for Gamers in Writing ... - ECONTENTZ

Let?s face it the average video gamer has the attention span of a gnat. so of you are going to catch their attention when writing a video game review you need to do it quick. In other words, start with a 5-star method at the top. How many stars is it worth?

Next you must explain at the bottom who you rate the video games, and your criteria, because a true gamer is not interested in your opinion unless you quantify things. The next critical point of contention in video game review writing is to explain the level of play; is it for a beginner, intermediate or advanced player.

Of course, the feel of the game, responsiveness and speed of play are also extremely important to the video gamer and its okay to tell it like it is. If the graphics are gay or they suck, then say so. How realistic are the characters and scenery? This is where you can go into detail about the landscape, buildings, attire of characters and how they interact, how real to life is it?

Another significant factor is the point system; is it fair, does it cheat the gamer, and are there ways to boost the point score using various strategies and tricks. If you really want your gaming reviews to get the five stars that you only give the very best video games that you review, then you must give the gamer pointers and tricks to better their scores, and better their chances of winning. Tips and tricks are the most interesting points of any gaming review, so don?t let us down.

News Corp. considers split in 2, stock jumps

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is preparing to spin off its newspaper business into a separate company, an acknowledgement that the printed page that gave rise to a media empire will never again be central to its future.

Murdoch's plan to split his company represents a break from the past. The 81-year-old billionaire built the company from a single Australian newspaper he inherited from his father. And through the years, he maintained a fondness for newspapers even as he purchased entertainment companies and assembled a global conglomerate with a market value of $52 billion.

The Wall Street Journal, News Corp.'s flagship newspaper, reported early Tuesday that News Corp.'s board of directors will consider the plan Wednesday and possibly announce its approval Thursday morning.

Under the proposal, newspapers will be shunted off into a separate publicly traded entity, which Murdoch will control along with a second company that comprises News Corp.'s entertainment business. That portion of the company includes Fox News Channel, its broadcast TV network and the 20th Century Fox movie studio.

Investors hailed Tuesday's announcement that News Corp. is considering a split, sending the stock up $1.68, or 8.3 percent, to close at $21.76 Tuesday. During the day, the stock was as high as $21.89, its highest level since hitting $21.90 on Oct. 25, 2007.

Analysts said the newspaper and book publishing division could be worth about $5 billion ? what Murdoch paid the Bancroft family for Dow Jones & Co., the publisher of The Wall Street Journal, in 2007.

News Corp. investors have never liked that acquisition and over the last five years the stock price has stagnated, hurt by fears Murdoch would overpay for other newspaper assets.

By contrast, investors adore Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey, who along with Murdoch's son James, the deputy COO, have been steering the company toward a future based on expanding profitable pay TV operations around the globe.

The split could be beneficial for both companies. Part of News Corp.'s problem in recent years is that it has been trying to please two kinds of investors with different, and somewhat conflicting, demands: Those looking to make a killing on a rising stock price and more conservative ones who like less risky, more predictable companies that pay generous dividends.

News Corp. has failed to please either. Its stock is no higher than it was five years ago, and it pays a dividend of just 17 cents a year, or 0.8 percent of what it costs to buy a share. The average company in the S&P 500 stock index pays its owners cash each year equivalent to 2 percent of its stock price.

A spin off might change this. It would free the TV and film business from the drag of the slower growing publishing business. And it would allow the publishing business the freedom to hike its cash payout.

"News Corp. has one of the best TV businesses, but some people like musty, dusty publishing companies that pay great dividends," said Barton Crockett, an analyst at Lazard Capital. "It's a good thing for shareholders."

Crockett said newspapers have been raising dividends lately, and he thinks a separate News Corp. publishing business could do the same, possibly to 6 percent, which is what rival Gannett Co. pays.

News Corp.'s move comes as Britain's communications regulator, Ofcom, enters the final stages of its review of whether satellite TV firm British Sky Broadcasting is "fit and proper" to hold a broadcast license. News Corp. holds a 39 percent stake in BSkyB, but its ownership is in jeopardy because of the hacking probe.

Analysts said the separation of assets might appease regulators and help the company avoid being forced to sell its remaining stake, worth some $6.9 billion.

"I'm not saying it completely ameliorates Ofcom's concerns. But I think it helps," said Canaccord Genuity analyst Tom Eagan.

British investigators have been probing allegations that News Corp.'s U.K. newspaper journalists hacked into phones and bribed public officials in the hunt for scoops. The probe caused the company to abandon its bid for full control of BSkyB last year.

The media conglomerate did not specify Tuesday which businesses each company would contain, although The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that the company is considering separating the newspaper and book publishing businesses from the entertainment arm.

News Corp.'s entertainment business is far more profitable. It accounted for about 75 percent of the company's revenue and nearly all of the operating profit in the first nine months of the fiscal year, which ends this coming Saturday.

Bernstein analyst Todd Juenger said in a research note that the split would allow the company to invest more in the growing entertainment field "without the baggage of publishing."

A former News Corp. executive familiar with internal company deliberations says such a split has been talked about for years, although discussions gained new momentum in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal, which erupted last July.

The former executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to speak candidly about internal company deliberations, said no final decision has been made.

Evercore Partners analyst Alan Gould said that without the publishing assets, revenue growth at the bigger TV and movie entity would nearly double to about 7 percent a year.

It is unclear if the spun-off publishing unit would also bear the legal costs of the U.K. probe. In the first nine months of the fiscal year, probe costs have totaled $167 million.

The point of a split is not to create a smaller company "that would just wither and die," said Tom Eagan, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity. It would have to contain enough profitable businesses to attract investors.

Eagan pointed to the successful spin-off of cable TV giant Time Warner Cable Inc. from the entertainment company Time Warner Inc. in March 2009. Because the cable division was more willing to pay out dividends and buy back shares, its stock price has more than tripled since then. Meanwhile, Time Warner Inc.'s stock price has doubled.

Time Warner shareholders were granted stakes in both separated companies and likely fared better than if the company hadn't split, Eagan said.

So-called conglomerates that combine disparate businesses in one company were once popular. But the fashion for many years has been to slim down and simplify.

Motorola recently spun off its cellphone unit. Sara Lee Corp. is creating a new public company from its European coffee and tea business. Kraft Foods Inc. is also splitting in two ? one for North American brands like Velveeta and one for Cadbury chocolates and other global snacks.

The problem for News Corp. isn't just that newspapers and books make less money than television and film. It's also that investors value the earnings from each differently. They are willing to pay less for a single dollar of earnings from the former than they are for a single dollar of earnings from the latter.

On Monday, investors buying News Corp. stock were paying the equivalent of $5.80 for every $1 of operating earnings that the combined company is expected to generate this year, according to Gould. That's 20 percent lower, or $1.50 less, than investors are paying for more pure play TV and film companies like CBS Corp. and Viacom Inc.

Do the math on News Corp.'s expected $6 billion in operating earnings this year, and that means the company is being valued $9 billion less than its TV and film rivals. Gould says the idea behind the split is to capture some of that $9 billion. He believes the company could do it and is recommending that his investing clients buy the stock.

Scope for Android enters beta, gets a major overhaul in the process

Android Central

Socialscope is something of an enigma in the mobile, social networking world. First arriving on BlackBerry, before progressing over to Android, the application has always required an invitation to use. As such, it has gained an air of notoriety. You can't get in, so you want in. Development work on the Android iteration has been ongoing since the initial release of Alphascope back in November. The last update brought a significant visual upgrade, but nothing like the latest efforts. Now rebranded simply as Scope, as the application progresses to beta things are a whole lot different. We've been on the inside for sometime now as various versions have been tested, so we're pleased to be able to finally give you our first impressions.

First up is additional service support. Besides the already supported Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare, Tumblr is now supported as well. Instagram is still viewing only, although that is to be expected. Scope fits the bill for all though, be they social juggernauts or more casual users.

The main homescreen lists all your different services, providing each with a colorful icon with which to identify them. Scope is a joy to navigate, with a swipe-oriented approach to navigation and a gorgeous UI. The way the content is displayed is really well done. Photos are displayed big, and bold, and can almost take over your timeline at times. Think about the new Google+ app, turn the dial a little more, and we're somewhere close.

And, that is a big positive for Scope. It breaks down all your social content into various sub-categories, allowing you to simply swipe between them. Besides breaking it down by service, content can be viewed by type. Scope will highlight any posts that are posting photos, or videos, or check-ins, breaking each off into their own category.

Additionally to swiping between adjoining pages, tapping the blue button in the bottom right brings up a scrollable dock at the bottom of the screen. This allows quick switching between the various categories, just without the page swiping. There's definitely more than one way of achieving the same objective, but it's all so nicely done. It's pretty fast too, and very smooth.

Eventually, Scope will become open to all, and it should take a place on everyones "to try" list. For an all in one social app, Scope is going to be hard to top. And, this is from an application still in beta. If you can snag an invitation, then do. Not just because everyone likes to be in on something closed off from the masses, but because it's a really impressive application.

In the meantime, we've got a selection of screenshots for you after the break. And, if you've got an account, or, an invite, head on over to the Play Store now to download a copy.

Jenny McCarthy Playboy Cover: Revealed!

Some things really do get better with age.

Just months away from turning 40, and 19 years after she got naked in Playboy for the first time, Jenny McCarthy is back in the men's magazine.

And she's still got it.

The model / actress' fourth nude pictorial hits newsstands this Friday in the July / August issue. Check out the just-released cover photo of Jenny McCarthy in Playboy:

Jenny McCarthy Nude

"I'm really proud of it," McCarthy told People of the pictorial.

"The pictures are really gorgeous and classy. They really could be out of W magazine."

"They're just really elegant photos. It's probably a lot more sophisticated than a lot of the stuff you'd see of people with their clothes on."

"The one thing I like about Playboy is they don't have the anorexic look. The women are voluptuous. So I didn't really want to diet. I just wanted to tone up."

Mission accomplished, we'd have to say. Models everywhere need to take a cue from this (and Kate Upton pictures) and do what comes naturally: Eat.

TERRE HAUTE ?

An evening to cherish

?

On May 21, Davis Park Elementary School held a special event. The special needs teachers put on a Family Appreciation Dinner. All special needs students and their families were able to come for spaghetti, breadsticks and dessert. It was our way of thanking our families for sharing their children with us. Without the support of our families, we would not see the progress and growth we see each year with our students.

We are truly blessed to have each of our students in our lives. Our students and families mean so much to us, and we wanted to thank them. This dinner was one way of giving back to each and every one of them.

At our dinner, we were fortunate to have two special guests. Susie Thompson came and shared information about UCP (United Cerebral Palsy). She brought some resources from the lending library and talked about how our families could access these resources. We also had Austin Seeley from Wabash Valley Tumbling and Gymnastics. Austin shared information about the Rebels Pride cheer team, which is open to any special needs child. We also had Jeff Blake, Dr. John Olsen, Sandy Sanders and Kathy Walker from Covered Bridge Special Education District stop by to visit with our families. Thank you.

All families were able to take home a door prize because of the generosity of our community. We would like to personally thank Uncle Al?s for their donation of cake and pie for dessert. Fazoli?s gave us a discount on breadsticks, and The Original Spaghetti & Sub House gave us a deal on our spaghetti. Cindy Sowards and the Thomas family were kind enough to donate candles and picture frames for each family from their warehouse. Katie Ireland, one of the Kid?s Hope Mentors from Maryland Community Church, dug into her purse and gave us a Disney Store gift card and a La Isla gift certificate.

We also received donations from Cinnabon, Geneva Hills Golf Course, Gingersnaps, The Element, Always Sun Tanning, McDonald?s, Finzel?s Master Tech, Mark?s Par Three, George?s Caf?, Jade Garden, Wabash Valley Harley Davidson, Sonic, Family Video, Texas Roadhouse, Pizza Hut, Wise Pies, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Cracker Barrel, Mogger?s Brewery, Atterson Tire, Jonesey?s East Side Diner, Ryan?s, Diana?s Flower & Gift, Beef ?O? Brady?s, MCL, Kroger, Long John Silver?s, Mike?s Market, Square Donuts, T.G.I. Friday?s, Baesler?s, Lone Star, AMC Theatres and Fantastic Sam?s.

We also received donations from Stables Steakhouse, Springhill Suites, Leslie Nees with Avon and Holly Spence Photography. The Indianapolis Colts, Indianapolis Indians and Chicago Cubs also sent donations. We also need to thank our principal, Dr. Tammy Roeschlein, for her support and presence during this event. Mary Moore, our cafeteria manager, generously helped us in the kitchen as well.

We cannot possibly express our gratitude to everyone. Our families and students were amazed by the kindness of the community. It was definitely an evening that we will treasure for a very long time.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A new Disney princess has ascended to the box-office throne with a No. 1 debut for Pixar Animation's "Brave."

The latest from the makers of "WALL-E," ''Finding Nemo" and the "Toy Story" movies opened with $66.7 million domestically, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Brave" added $13.5 million in 10 overseas markets for a worldwide start of $80.2 million.

Featuring a feisty Scottish princess, "Brave" was the first of Disney's Pixar animations with a female protagonist. And it left American hero Abraham Lincoln in the dust.

The 20th Century Fox action tale "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" opened far back at No. 3 with $16.5 million, behind "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted."

DreamWorks Animation's animated "Madagascar" sequel had been No. 1 for two weekends and added $20.2 million to raise its domestic total to $157.6 million.

"Brave" is the 13th-straight Pixar release to open at No. 1 since "Toy Story" launched Hollywood's age of computer animation in 1995.

"Their track record is just unbelievable," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "The Pixar brand just carries so much weight with the audience, it doesn't matter almost what the story is about if it has the Pixar name."

The weekend's other new wide release, Steve Carell and Keira Knightley's apocalyptic romance "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," misfired with just $3.8 million, debuting at No. 10.

The Focus Features film, playing in much narrower release than other top-10 movies, stars Carell and Knightley as heartbroken neighbors on a road trip as a killer asteroid hurtles toward Earth.

Woody Allen's Italian romance "To Rome with Love" pulled in huge audiences in limited release, debuting with $379,371 in five theaters. That gave the Sony Pictures Classics release a whopping average of $75,874 a theater, compared to $16,028 in 4,164 cinemas for "Brave."

"Brave" features a voice cast led by Kelly Macdonald and Emma Thompson in a mother-daughter story of a young Scottish princess defying tradition that requires her to marry against her will.

The film proved that audiences will turn up for a female hero, not just the male protagonists of past Pixar flicks, such as Woody and Buzz of "Toy Story," the robot of "WALL-E" or the rat and his chef buddy of "Ratatouille."

"Brave" matched the $66.1 million debut of Pixar's "Cars 2," with male automotive lead Lightning McQueen, over the same weekend a year ago.

"It is a phenomenal thing, these guys and their mastery of big storytelling and character development, delivering something that plays well to adults as well as kids, to girls as well as boys," Dave Hollis, Disney's head of distribution, said of Pixar.

The audience for "Brave" did lean toward females, who accounted for 57 percent of viewers. Two-thirds of the film's business came from families, who also continued to flock to "Madagascar 3," making a rare weekend when two PG-rated movies led the box office.

The R-rated "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" was a clever idea ? the 16th U.S. president waging his own civil war against the blood-suckers of the republic. But critics were unimpressed, and action fans had only a passing interest in the movie, which featured relative unknown Benjamin Walker as Lincoln.

Still, it was made for $69 million, a modest budget for a summer action movie, and 20th Century Fox had hopes it would hold up well over the next week or so before "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises" swoop in to take over cinemas in July.

"It's actually a good start for this movie," said Chris Aronson, the studio's head of distribution. "This is an interesting and untested genre that I think audiences are going to continue to seek out. Mash-ups have been done, but the historical mash-up has not been done."

Estimated ticket sales were for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Brave," $66.7 million ($13.5 million international).

2. "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," $20.2 million ($30.1 million international).

3. "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," $16.5 million ($8.1 million international).

4. "Prometheus," $10 million ($12.7 million international).

5. "Snow White & the Huntsman," $8.01 million ($22.6 million international).

6. "Rock of Ages," $8 million ($2.9 million international).

7. "That's My Boy," $7.9 million ($900,000 international).

8. "The Avengers," $7 million ($2.3 million international).

Mariners 6-pack of pitchers no-hits Dodgers

(AP) ? Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan popped his head into the clubhouse interview room and insisted his normally stoic manager enjoyed the history that just took place.

"It's OK to smile skip, we just got a no-no," Ryan shouted to Seattle manager Eric Wedge, bringing a smile and chuckle to Wedge's face.

There were plenty of smiles to go around the Seattle clubhouse late Friday night, mostly because so many had a hand in the third no-hitter in Seattle's history.

Kevin Millwood pitched six no-hit innings before leaving with a groin injury, and a of Seattle relievers continued to hold the Dodgers in check until Tom Wilhelmsen closed out a 1-0 win over Los Angeles for his third save.

Seattle's six-pack of arms joined the Mets' Johan Santana, the Angels' Jered Weaver and White Sox right-hander Philip Humber on the no-hit list of 2012. It was the second no-hitter at Safeco Field this season after Humber's perfect game against the Mariners in April ? the first two in the park's 13-year history.

The 10th combined no-hitter in major league history tied the record with six pitchers used and was the first since a six-pack of Astros no-hit the New York Yankees in June 2003. Three combined no-hitters happened in a two-year span of 1990 and 1991, including then California Angels' Mark Langston and Mike Witt combining to no-hit the Mariners 1-0 on April 11, 1990.

This time it was Seattle's turn to add another bit of baseball lore to its history. Seattle had not thrown a no-hitter since Chris Bosio did it against the Boston Red Sox on April 22, 1993. Since that day, the Mariners had been no-hit twice, including earlier this season when Humber tossed the 21st perfect game in major league history and the Mariners were left to watch the White Sox celebrate on the Safeco Field mound.

On Friday night, after Wilhelmsen got Andre Ethier to ground out to second for the final out, it was rookie catcher Jesus Montero running around with his arms in the air looking for someone to celebrate with.

"It was really fun. I was praying at the last inning," Montero said. "It was one of my dreams. It was amazing, an amazing feeling."

The six pitchers tied the record for the most used in a no-hitter and each played an important role, from Charlie Furbush quickly entering the game after Millwood left in the seventh to Brandon League finding the nasty splitter that had eluded him in recent weeks to Wilhelmsen being so oblivious that teammates had to tell him he just completed a no-hitter.

Exactly a week after Santana pitched the first no-hitter in Mets history, Millwood cruised through six innings, giving up only a walk. But after throwing his first warmup pitch for the seventh he felt a twinge in his groin and was pulled.

The Dodgers nearly got a hit when speedy Dee Gordon led off the ninth with a slow roller to shortstop. Ryan, who had just entered as a defensive replacement, charged in and fired to first, where umpire Ted Barrett called Gordon out on a bang-bang play.

Gordon and manager Don Mattingly argued. Replays were inconclusive.

Elian Herrera then lined out to Ryan before Ethier's grounder ended the first no-hitter for the Mariners since Bosio. Seattle's other no-hitter was thrown by Randy Johnson against Detroit on June 2, 1990.

It was the 10th combined no-hitter in big league history and the first since six Astros accomplished the feat at Yankee Stadium on June 11, 2003. Roy Oswalt started that game for Houston but left two pitches into the second inning with a strained right groin.

"I'm excited for all these guys that came in the game out of the bullpen and kept it going. It's a little bit more exciting for those guys when they can be a part of it," Millwood said.

The 37-year-old Millwood, who spent much of last season in the minors, threw a no-hitter all his own for the Philadelphia Phillies against San Francisco on April 27, 2003. And this combined no-hitter was no ordinary feat: The Dodgers entered with the best record in the majors and the second-highest batting average in the National League.

"This was a lot better than having it against you, that's for sure," said Kyle Seager, whose RBI single in the seventh accounted for the only run.

The oddity to this no-hitter was the amount of changes Wedge made. Furbush was a spot decision after Millwood pulled himself out with what was later announced as a mild right-groin strain. Wedge then went to Pryor (1-0) who impressively got the final out of the seventh before walking a pair to open the eighth.

Pryor was followed by Lucas Luetge, and then it was League, who has temporarily lost his closer role, but rediscovered his biting slider to get out of a major jam with runners on second and third and just one out in the eighth. Finally, it was Wilhelmsen, picking up his third save of the season and easily his most memorable.

"When you win a one nothing ball game in that fashion, so many different people have to step up, defensively and on the mound," Wedge said. "And that's what you saw tonight."

Notes: The Astros also used six pitchers in their combined no-hitter against the Yankees in 2003. ... Seager's RBI single was his 23rd two-out RBI this season, the most of any hitter in the American League. ... Seattle ace Felix Hernandez was pushed back and will start Tuesday against San Diego. Hernandez has been bothered by a sore back. ... Weaver and Jose Arredondo combined to hold the Dodgers hitless for eight innings in a 1-0 Dodgers win in 2008, but that game doesn't count as a no-hitter under the rules baseball adopted in 1991 because the Angels only had to pitch eight innings.
