Iconic Burroughs Wellcome Headquarters Open For Rare Public Tour

Burroughs Wellcome Headquarters Iconic Burroughs Wellcome Headquarters Open For Rare Public Tour

Triangle Modernist Houses sponsors one-day tour of Paul Rudolph?s Only NC Project

(Research Triangle Park, NC) ? The internationally renowned Burroughs Wellcome Headquarters building in Research Triangle Park, designed by the late Paul Rudolph, FAIA, has not been open for public tour 30 years. That will change on Saturday, October 20th, when Triangle Modernist Houses (TMH) sponsors a rare public tour of the building from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Known as the Elion-Hitchings building since 1988, honoring Nobel prize-winning chemists Gertrude Elion and George Hitchings, the futuristic, tiered structure is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Triangle and one of architect Rudolph?s most compelling achievements. ?The building has been closed to the public for decades as pharmaceutical companies Glaxo, Glaxo Wellcome, and Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) were actively using it as office and laboratory space.

Rudolph, dean of the Yale School of Architecture for six years, began designing the building in 1969. Construction was completed in 1971, at which time Burroughs Wellcome relocated its U.S. headquarters from Tuckahoe, New York, to North Carolina?s Research Triangle Park. ?Rudolph described the building, known for its extensive use of concrete and highly complex floor plans, as a ?man-made extension of the ridge upon which it is built,? hence the structure?s angular shape.

In 1981, part of the sci-fi thriller ?Brainstorm? was filmed there, starring Natalie Wood and Christopher Walken. The tour will access five floors, including the executive area where the movie was filmed, as well as the lobby, library, office areas, auditorium, cafeteria, and many offices.

TMH founder and director George Smart arranged the tour through United Therapeutics, the building?s new owner since June 2012. ??Rudolph started his career designing Modernist houses in Florida,? said Smart.? ?As the building is unoccupied prior to renovation, this is the perfect moment.? This is the public?s only chance to see his work.? The building is his only project in North Carolina.?

According to Smart, United Therapeutics has committed to preserving the Modernist Elion-Hitchings building and will begin renovation later this fall as part of the growing company?s RTP expansion.???We extend our heartfelt thanks to UT for arranging this exceptionally rare opportunity for the public to experience the Elion-Hitchings building,? he said. ?UT has been great to work with.?

Advance, timed admission tickets are $9.95 per person for the public, $7.95 per person for TMH Mod Squad members, or $15 per person at the door if the tour does not sell out. ??Children who are carried or are in strollers are free.

Photography is allowed inside and outside, but food and beverages are not.? Tour-goers must sign a liability release before entering. ?All proceeds benefit TMH?s ongoing documentation, preservation, and promotion projects.

For more details on the tour and to purchase advance tickets, go to www.trianglemodernisthouses.com/bwtour. For more information on Triangle Modernist Houses, visit www.trianglemodernisthouses.com.

Kentucky Health News: Covington police chief: New prescription ...

Kentucky's new prescription drug law may be having its desired effect of taking prescription painkillers off the streets but could be forcing those very same addicts into transitioning to heroin. That's the view of Covington Police Chief Spike Jones who took his case to the Kentucky Senate Judiciary Committee last week to complain about increased crime in his area and to ask for some money for help.

The drug law passed in April 2012 -- known in some circles as House Bill 1 -- was written such that Kentucky doctors are required to complete patients' medical histories, conduct physicals, check photo identifications and run names through the state's KASPER (Kentucky All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting) database before prescribing a controlled substance for pain relief. It has required a vast network of oversight of doctors and patients by government and licensing entities. This has reportedly caused some doctors to stop writing those prescriptions completely.

Tiffany Wilson of Cincinnati's WKRC-TV reports that Chief Jones reports more prostitution, theft, car thefts and car break-ins in his northern Kentucky region. He asked the state legislature for money to research how deep the problem is and to discuss the need for more treatment facilities.?

Jones pointed to the recent closure of the pain management clinic of Dr. Gary Shearer in Florence as adding to the problem. Shearer's license was suspended following the death of 15 patients from prescription drug overdoses. These patients, Jones told Wilson, are exactly the ones at risk for taking the next step and turning to heroin. He added that heroin dealers will often give potential customers the first hit for free, "and from that point, there's no returning to prescription pills." (Read more)

Noell Blevins: Are You My Mother?

I can still see their big brown eyes. Staring back at me trying to figure out if I'm safe to like. I've seen my boys for the first time and I'm in love. Deep, deep love. It seemed almost instant.

Our two sons. Brothers. One a baby and just learning to talk and one learning to read. I watched as T and Z effortlessly chatted with their brother. Within 10 minutes Z had him catching a football. While my baby was more interested in the cookies I toted along.

I can tell he's trying to figure us out; are we safe, are we forever, are we trustable. The little guy sitting on Js lap as they played a game. Little guy pauses long enough to spontaneously ask J if he likes to swim. And if our family likes pizza. What does our house look like.

I'm caught up in feeding the baby a toddler size meal of Mac and cheese and a sliver of a hot dog. Flashbacks of my teens running through my mind. These little toddler forks look much different these days. My baby smiles at me as I share my water. I'm staring into the eyes of my baby!

After a few hours little man is hooked on us. I wrote him a card and gave him our picture. We sat and read it together. He clutched the photo to his little fleece jacket and asked if he could put it under his pillow. I almost cried.

Questions came from little man such as; are you really my forever family? Are you my dad? I can't wait to squeeze your dogs. Are you my mom? How far away is your house?? Do I have my own room? What kind of toys do you have? Do you like pizza?

Then a brother to a sister... I hear little man ask T if she's gone all day at school. How long is her school? Do you ride the bus? When she tells her brother that she drives and has a car his eyes turned into brown saucers... "can I go in your car?" he asks with anticipation.

This first visit was all it took. I love my boys.

Before we left, we got together as a large family (foster family, boys, and us) and prayed in a circle. As I glanced over... I saw J sitting on the floor with little man wrapped around his shoulders from behind. We grasped hands to pray as a big family and little man said the sweetest 8 words ever spoken.

Dear Jesus, thank you for my new family. Amen.

I have never known as love like this. It's different than with my birth kids. With every cell in my body I want to protect them from danger, harm, cold, dark, harsh speech, fists. My kids have never been in need of this kind of protection. I think they realize their lives have been so blessed. And that their brothers desperately need love.

I wish I could have taken them home today. But there are a couple of i's to dot and T's to cross. And beds to set up. High hairs and hot dogs to purchase. If all goes accordingly, our boys should be home this week!

God is absolutely incredible. I'm so in love.?

The Lost Poetry of Sikh Poet Nunihal Singh Layal: Man Lives By ...

Oct 8, 2012 by JOE GANDELMAN, Editor-In-Chief

(Editor?s Note: This is part of an ongoing series to preserve on the Internet the ?lost? poetry of Nunihal Singh Layal, the ?Tradesman Poet,? who I met in New Delhi in 1974. Some poems contain his original introductions. I have a self-published book of his that is disintegrating and falling apart and over the next year or two I will run and preserve all of his poetry here. This includes every word of the original introductions. Joe Gandelman. FOOTNOTE: Due to a 9 month road trip this project was interrupted but it will continue until his entire book is immortalized online. GO HERE to read past entries.)

Man Lives By Action
by Nunihal Singh Layal

All who are born, must die one day. But the actions of a person never die. A good action done in life makes a man immortal and reflects his mind to the coming generation. Thus he lives by actions and not by age.

Man Lives by actions and not by age,
Open the history and see the page,
Rich or poor; King or Sage;
The actions made them live forever in name and fame.
This life is a circle of pain and pleasure,
To work and tire, to rest in leisure,
Work is worship, and source of pleasure,
Dignity of labour, encourages work, wealth and thus gives pleasure.

MAKING STATEMENT

Signature victories, statement games, surprisingly easy wins and one stunning upset.

Nine ranked teams lost Saturday and the Top 25 underwent an extreme makeover Sunday, with South Carolina, Florida and West Virginia moving into the top five.

No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Oregon held their spots at the top of the rankings. Alabama is a unanimous No. 1 again.

No. 3 South Carolina, off a 35-7 victory against Georgia, moved up three spots. No. 4 Florida jumped six spots after beating LSU 14-6. No. 5 West Virginia moved up three with a 48-45 victory at Texas.

No. 6 Kansas State, No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 8 Ohio State also moved up. LSU dropped five to No. 9 and unbeaten Oregon State is No. 10.

Florida State fell from No. 3 to No. 12 after losing 17-16 on a last-minute touchdown at North Carolina State.

The last time nine ranked teams lost in one week was Oct. 18, 2008.

No team was more impressive than South Carolina.

Coach Steve Spurrier has the Gamecocks ranked higher than they have been in 28 years.

"Have we ever been that high before? How about '84?" Spurrier asked during his conference call with reporters Sunday. South Carolina reached No. 2 late in the 1984 season.

"Well, we've still got a ways to go," he added.

The ball coach loves to talk about doing things they've never done before with the Gamecocks. It's what led him to take over a program with no Southeastern Conference championships after overgrown expectations at Florida drew him to the NFL.

Behind pass-rushing terror Jadeveon Clowney and hard-running Marcus Lattimore, the Gamecocks have emerged as the leading contender in the SEC to knock off Alabama ? if South Carolina can get a crack at the Tide.

They don't play in the regular season, but could meet in the SEC championship game.

But that's a long way away ? especially with South Carolina heading to LSU next Saturday and Florida the week after. The Gamecocks finish, as usual, with No. 16 Clemson.

"I would say we probably have the toughest schedule of those other teams," Spurrier said of the national title contenders.

The Gators haven't been in the top five during the regular season since 2009. That was the end of the Tim Tebow era. Year 2 under Will Muschamp is starting to feel a bit like Urban Meyer's second season at Florida. Those Gators won the national title.

As for West Virginia, this just about sums it up: In the last two weeks, the Mountaineers have allowed 108 points and won both games.

Next up for the Geno Smith and the Mountaineers is another trip back to Texas, this time Lubbock to face Texas Tech (4-1).

___

MOVING UP

Speaking of Meyer, Ohio State moved up four spots to No. 8 in the rankings after a 63-38 victory against Nebraska in Columbus, Ohio.

Everybody knows by now the Buckeyes are playing only for pride because of an NCAA postseason ban, one they probably could have avoided if Ohio State officials had self-imposed it last year and not waited for the NCAA to weigh in on the tattoo scandal.

No doubt every Buckeye is now regretting that decision.

In a year when the Big Ten looks down, Ohio State seems capable of going undefeated. No. 25 Michigan is the only other Big Ten team ranked this week.

The Big Ten has said it will present Ohio State ? or Penn State, for that matter ? with a Leaders Division trophy if it wins the division.

There's one more trophy available for Ohio State, though it's a long shot.

The AP has been crowning a national champion since 1936, and the Buckeyes could conceivably finish No. 1 in the media poll, though it would likely take just about every other team losing at least once.

The last sanction-strapped team to make a similar push was Auburn in 1993, which went 11-0 under Terry Bowden and finished No. 4.

___

MOVING DOWN

Florida State, No. 9 LSU and No. 15 Georgia all took tumbles in the rankings after spending the whole season ranked in the top seven.

The Seminoles' loss was the most stunning and most damaging. But maybe we should have seen it coming. Since 2007, Florida State has lost six road games to unranked teams when it was ranked.

The latest was probably the most disappointing because the Seminoles seemed primed to make a run at playing in the BCS championship game. The ACC is without another dominant team. Clemson is the only other ranked squad from the conference, and Florida State already beat the Tigers.

The Wolfpack hadn't shown much against their best opponents, especially defensively. But they shut out EJ Manuel and Florida State in the second half.

"They fought for the inches and made the inches and we didn't," coach Jimbo Fisher lamented.

___

IN AND OUT

No. 21 Cincinnati (4-0) and No. 22 Texas A&M are ranked for the first time this season, and No. 24 Boise State and No. 25 Michigan are back after falling out earlier.

In between is No. 23 Louisiana Tech, which hasn't been ranked in the Top 25 since 1999. The Bulldogs (5-0) are third in the nation in scoring at 53 points per game and are a serious threat to bust into the BCS from the Western Athletic Conference a la Boise State.

The biggest hurdle comes next week against Texas A&M in Shreveport, La. The game was originally scheduled the opening week of the season, but it was postponed because of severe weather.

Falling out of the rankings after losing were TCU, Nebraska, Northwestern, UCLA and Washington.

___

FROM THE ARCHIVES

No. 10 Oregon State is in the top 10 for the first time since 2001, when it was No. 10 after the first week and ended the season unranked.

The last time the Beavers were ranked in the top 10 later in the season was 2000, when they finished No. 4 in the country and beat Notre Dame 41-9 in the Fiesta Bowl.

____

ODDS AND ENDS

The Big East has three ranked teams (Cincinnati, Rutgers and Louisville), and the best news for the rebuilding league is they are all schools that are staying put next season, when Boise State also joins. ... Louisiana Tech is headed to Conference USA next season. The league tweeted out: "Congrats to our future C-USA member!" ... Unbeaten Ohio University from the Mid-American Conference just missed being ranked, 79 points to 82 for Michigan.
