Texas Digest: DPS has fired 37 since 2010; Texas A&M dedicates biodefence center

37 fired since '10; number called ?low'

Texas Department of Public Safety officials said they have fired 37 employees since 2010 for various offenses, although a civil rights advocate called the number "shockingly low."

The Houston Chronicle reported Monday that DPS fired them for incidents including drunken driving, domestic violence and sexual harassment.

Lt. Col. David Baker, the agency's deputy director for law enforcement, says a few instances of "bad judgment" are expected with a work force of 8,832 employees.

Jim Harrington of the Texas Civil Rights Project says he wonders whether incidents are being hidden from DPS investigators. The agency earlier this year provided statistics showing 67 employees had left the agency in 2010 and 2011, including 37 who either resigned or retired while under investigation. Seven employees have been fired in 2012.

Texas A&M dedicates biodefense center

Texas A&M University on Monday formally dedicated a new national biodefense center where researchers work on strategies to respond to bioterrorism and develop vaccines in the event of a pandemic or a chemical, biological or nuclear threat.

The A&M Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing is one of three such national centers announced last month.

Texas has committed $40 million to the nearly $300 million project on the Texas A&M campus. The federal government is contributing $176 million.
