Washington DC - On January 18, 2012, Dr. Peter R. Jutro, Deputy Director for Science and Policy, National Homeland Security Research Center in the Office of Research and Development at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, will lead a session titled "National Resilience: Biological Terrorism and Environmental Security". Strengthening national resilience to bioterrorism threats involves maximizing advanced warning, being prepared to provide timely and adequate medical countermeasures, making emergency healthcare available, and accelerating efforts to detect contamination and decontaminate the environment.

This session will be followed by a session given by Dr. Alan Hecht, Senior Advisor to the Assistant Administrator of the Office of Research and Development at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, entitled "Safe, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities". Security is no longer merely concerned with the defense of U.S. interests against hostile regimes or terrorist attacks, but also includes protection of our sources of food, energy, water, and materials, which are the foundation of economic growth and community prosperity. This broader view of national security reflects the fact that global pressures now threaten the well being and resilience of both human society and the natural environment.

What: "National Resilience: Biological Terrorism and Environmental Security" & "Safe, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities", two EPA sponsored sessions at the National Council on Science & Environment's 2012 Conference on Environment & Security in Washington, DC.
