Former President George H.W. Bush moved out of intensive care

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Former President George H.W. Bush's condition improved enough for him to be moved on Saturday out of the intensive care unit and into a regular room at the Houston hospital where he was admitted last month for respiratory problems, a spokesman said.

Bush, 88, who served as president from 1989 to 1993, entered Methodist Hospital on November 23 for treatment of what doctors said was bronchitis, and he was moved into the ICU last Sunday after suffering a number of medical complications, including a persistent fever.

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the air passages through the lungs.

"President Bush's condition has improved, so he has been moved today from the intensive care unit to a regular patient room at the Methodist Hospital to continue his recovery," the family said in a statement from his spokesman, Jim McGrath.

"The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes," it added.

McGrath said on Friday that Bush's condition was getting better and that he was even singing at times in his communications with doctors and nurses.

He added in an email reply to Reuters on Saturday, "George Bush is the most relentlessly upbeat man you'll ever meet, and his spirits have been good throughout this ordeal." He declined to disclose any information about Bush's prognosis or how much longer he might remain hospitalized.

Bush, the 41st U.S. president and a Republican, is the father of former President George W. Bush. In a political career spanning four decades, he also served as a congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, CIA director, and vice president for two terms under Ronald Reagan.

Bush has lower-body parkinsonism, which causes a loss of balance, and has used a wheelchair for more than a year.

The Weekend's Viewing: A stock population of peelers, toffs and prostitutes tell us nothing new about the Ripper's London

Ripper Street, a little ironically given the naked opportunism with which it exploits the allure of Whitechapel's most notorious killer, is based around a Victorian detective inspector who's sick to death of Jack the Ripper.

"I would have obsession blinker us to the wider world no longer," says DI Reid angrily at the end of the first episode, addressing himself to Chief Inspector Abberline (the real-life detective who investigated the Whitechapel murders) and a tabloid journalist who has found the Ripper very good for trade. So good, in fact, that he isn't above touching up a new crime scene to make it look more like the latest instalment of the Ripper's savage part-work. Both men see the Ripper in everything, which makes life difficult for Inspector Reid, who thinks that there's quite enough evil to be going on with without amplifying the legend of one particular demon.

Richard Warlow's series began with the indispensable components of a Victorian East End drama: gas light, cobbled streets crowded with prostitutes and drunks, wisps of a London peculiar adding to the atmosphere. Rather implausibly, a group of genteel tourists were being guided through the fetid alleyways, visiting the scenes of the Ripper's previous murders and, eventually, stumbling over what appeared to be his latest. Call for Inspector Reid (played by Matthew MacFadyen), who was hauled away from a nearby bare-knuckle fight, where his doughty Detective Sergeant Drake had gone undercover as a crooked pugilist. And call, too, for Reid's sidekick, Captain Jackson, an American visitor who we first saw pulling his head from between the thighs of a bemused tart, who appeared unused to such transatlantic erotic novelties. Both men have troubled relationships with the women in their life, and offered hints of a past that will presumably be revealed with strip-tease gradualness.

Captain Jackson did the Sherlock Holmes proto-CSI stuff, establishing that the dead woman had been strangled and mutilated to look like the Ripper's victim. From the callus on her collarbone, he guessed she was a fiddle player, and from the soot in her hair, that she'd travelled on the new underground line. And when the pair followed up the case of a missing violinist from Finchley, they found themselves stumbling into the world of Victorian porn. There were light traces of historical research: Warlow has looked through some glossaries of Victorian criminal slang and there was an intriguing moment when we found Reid looking at an Eadweard Muybridge pamphlet on Animal Locomotion, as if he had an early interest in the very technology that presents him to us. But the series seems less interested in what people don't already know about 19th-century London than in what they already do. One day, someone will really quarry into Mayhew and give us something other than the stock population of peelers, toffs and prostitutes. But it doesn't look as if it's happened yet.

The Hotel is back ? and Mark, the beleaguered owner of the Grosvenor in Torquay, has had the terrible idea of going upmarket. The occasional similarity between this series opener and a famous episode of Fawlty Towers did raise the odd doubt about how exactly unadulterated an account this is. But, allowing for the self-amplification that inevitably occurs when people find that they've become identifiable television characters, it feels authentic. I fear that Mark may not find "Guardian readers" (where he placed his first ad) quite as eager to share their private moments with the country as his current guests. But he'll need to do something soon. The Magic Ball he and Christian had organised to drum up extra business had been so incompetently costed that they lost three pounds a head on every satisfied customer. Christian carefully explained to the chef that it was supposed to be a loss leader. Part one of the plan worked, anyway.

Branch retinal vein occlusion ? blockage of the blood vessels that channel blood from the retina ? is a common eye disease. A type of blood clot in the eye, the disease causes reduced vision, and people with the disease also typically have an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes and other serious conditions. A young scientist from the University of Copenhagen has made a significant contribution to finding the cause of the disease.

A team of researchers at the University of Copenhagen, Glostrup Hospital and several other ophthalmology departments at Danish hospitals have now shown that it is highly probable that thickening of the arterial walls is behind the common eye disease known as branch retinal vein occlusion ? a type of blood clot in the eye that blocks the vessels that transport blood from the retina. The disease leads to reduced vision and affects more than 14 million people worldwide.

?Our new results indicate that branch retinal vein occlusion is caused by thickening of the arterial wall. This makes it crucial for doctors to treat patients diagnosed with the disease with medicine to lower blood pressure in order to prevent blood clots from forming in the heart and brain. Branch retinal vein occlusion is often a sign of increased risk of blood clots in other parts of the body,? explains Mette Bertelsen, PhD student at the University of Copenhagen.

Targeted treatment
Mette Bertelsen, head of the research project, and her colleagues photographically verified the diagnosis of branch retinal vein occlusion in 1168 people. They identified the patients? other diseases with the help of Danish national registries and compared the data to that of 116.800 healthy people.

By looking at the illness and mortality statistics of Danes diagnosed with a blood clot in the retina?s main blood vessels, both before and after the occurrence of the retinal blood clot, Mette Bertelsen and her colleges has now shown that while these patients show a higher frequency of arterial disease in the heart and brain, they do not display a higher frequency of venous disease. This new knowledge, which has been published in the British Medical Journal, means that disease prevention and treatment of these patients should be targeted at hypertension, diabetes and Atherosclerosis, while doctors can save patients from unnecessary treatment with anticoagulants.
Thickened arteries the villains

Doctors have long debated the three most likely theories about what causes branch retinal vein occlusion. Discussion centres on whether the disease is due to a) conditions in the veins that cause blood clots, b) a change in the composition of the blood, or c) blockage of the vein due to compression from an adjacent artery that has thickened and thus compresses the vein and hinders blood flow.

?To understand what is actually happening, it can be helpful to picture a garden hose that has been squeezed by a larger hose, cutting off the water supply. That is essentially what happens when a vein is compressed by a thickened artery. Clearly, the consequences can be serious,? explains Mette Bertelsen. She adds that no one knows exactly how many Danes suffer from branch retinal vein occlusion, but that more than 14 million people have the disease worldwide.

Bats may hold clues to long life and disease resistance

Dec. 20, 2012 ? Bats are amazing creatures. They've been around for at least 65 million years, and in that time have become one of the most abundant and widespread mammals on Earth.

The Bat Pack, a team of researchers at the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) in Geelong, conduct a wide range of research into bats and bat borne viruses, and their potential effects on the human population, as part of the effort to safeguard Australia from exotic and emerging pests and diseases.

Their paper, published today in the journal Science, provides an insight into the evolution of the bat's flight, resistance to viruses, and relatively long life.

The Bat Pack, in collaboration with the Beijing Genome Institute, led a team that sequenced the genomes of two bat species -- the Black Flying Fox, an Australian mega bat, and the David's Myotis, a Chinese micro bat.

Once the genomes were sequenced, they compared them to the genomes of other mammals, including humans, to find where the similarities and differences lay.

Chris Cowled, post-doctoral fellow at AAHL says the research may eventually lead to strategies to treat, or even prevent disease in humans.

"A deeper understanding of these evolutionary adaptations in bats may lead to better treatments for human diseases, and may eventually enable us to predict or perhaps even prevent outbreaks of emerging bat viruses," Dr Cowled said.

"Bats are a natural reservoir for several lethal viruses, such as Hendra, Ebola and SARS, but they often don't succumb to disease from these viruses. They're also the only mammal that can fly, and they live a long time compared to animals similar in size."

Flying is a very energy intensive activity that also produces toxic by-products, and bats have developed some novel genes to deal with the toxins. Some of these genes, including P53, are implicated in the development of cancer or the detection and repair of damaged DNA.

"What we found intriguing was that some of these genes also have secondary roles in the immune system," Dr Cowled said.

"We're proposing that the evolution of flight led to a sort of spill over effect, influencing not only the immune system, but also things like ageing and cancer."

The research was a global effort involving the Beijing Genome Institute in Shenzhen, China; Australia's national science research agency, the CSIRO; the University of Copenhagen; Wuhan Institute of Virology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences; the Naval Medical Research Center and Henry M. Jackson Foundation in the USA; Uniformed Services University, USA; and the Graduate Medical School at the Duke-National University of Singapore.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Facebook says it is testing a service that will charge users $1 to guarantee that messages they send to people they are not connected to arrive in users' inboxes, rather than in an often-ignored folder called "other."

Launched in 2011, the "other" folder is where Facebook routes messages it deems less relevant. Not quite spam, these include messages from people you most likely don't know, based on Facebook's reading of your social connections. Many users ignore this folder.

Now, users will be able to pay $1 to route their messages to non-friends. Facebook said Thursday that it is testing the service with a small percentage of individuals ? not businesses ? in the U.S.

"For example, if you want to send a message to someone you heard speak at an event but are not friends with, or if you want to message someone about a job opportunity, you can use this feature to reach their Inbox," Facebook said in an online post. "For the receiver, this test allows them to hear from people who have an important message to send them."

The company says charging for messages could help discourage spammers.

In October, Facebook unveiled another feature that lets users pay if they want more people to read their updates. For $7, users can promote a post to their friends, just as advertisers do.

Tickets fears justified as report says GB fans were sold short by London 2012

LONDON: The 2012 Olympic Games were an outstanding sporting show but one less-than-perfect sphere was ticketing and the extent of the failure to play fair with British fans has been laid bare by the full review of the sales process writes KEIR RADNEDGE.

A 976-page document highlights the gross number of tickets available to the ?Olympic family? compared to the relatively few available to the paying public for the most popular events.

For example:

* ?a sailing finals day on August 9 ? when Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell won silver in the men?s 470 ? saw 851 tickets go to sponsors but only single ticket made available to the public;

* Danny Boyle?s iconic opening ceremony ? one of the most in-demand tickets of the fortnight ? was watched by a crowd in which only 44pc accounted for public sales while 66pc went to the so-called ?Olympic family?;

* Only 43pc of tickets went to the public on the day in the velodrome when Sir Chris Hoy, Jason Kenny, Phillip Hindes won the men?s sprint final;

* Novak Djokovic?s opening Olympic match on Centre Court at Wimbledon, saw 97pc of the available seats go to Olympic members and federations;

* Just 1,046 of the 4,326 people who paid to watch triumphant triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee were home supporters;

* Only 285 ? or two per cent ? of 14,122 Park-only tickets during the second week went to ordinary fans.

In total 10.99m tickets were sold from a total 11.3m available: 8.21m were Olympics tickets and 2.78m were Paralympics tickets. Some 319,000 tickets (263,000 Olympic and 55,000 Paralympic) were unsold, the majority of these being early rounds for Olympic Football.

Just over 76.3 per cent of all Olympic and 91 per cent of all Paralympic tickets were sold through the UK application process against a target of 75pc. This amounted to an unprecedented 8.8m ?tickets sold and raised ?659m for LOCOG?s operating budget.

Observers say Pennsylvania isn't ready for major gun-control ...

If the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings spawn a surge of support for stronger gun-control laws, it?s going to have to be pretty strong to reach Pennsylvania.

Or maybe even imposed from Washington, D.C.

While there are signs since Friday?s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., that some politicians are willing to consider restrictions on guns and gun ownership, reactions from many state leaders have been largely limited to expressions of sympathy and regret.

And no state leaders considered among the strongest proponents of the Second Amendment have voiced anything like a conversion.

Gov. Tom Corbett, for example, commenting after an unrelated public appearance Tuesday in Dover, York County, said his immediate focus is on redoubling security measures at the state?s schools.

As for gun-control measures?

?We are not going to get into that right now,? Corbett told reporters. ?We?ve had discussions about gun-control legislation for many, many years, and there have been many gun-control laws that have been passed. ... I am for enforcing the laws we already have.?

This is not to say that gun-control proponents will not make the case here.

Shira Goodman, executive director of the gun-control group CeaseFirePA, said her group will push in Harrisburg for background checks of private gun sales and to bolster requirements that mental health records of Pennsylvanians get forwarded to national databases.

Gun-control proponents such as Sen. Daylin Leach, D-Montgomery County, vow to launch efforts requiring gun owners to report the loss or theft of their guns to police, or to cap the number of guns an individual can purchase at one per month.

Some nationwide public-opinion snapshots taken after Friday?s school shootings seem to have shown the opinion needle swinging in favor of stricter gun-control laws. A CBS News poll taken during the weekend showed 57 percent of respondents supporting stricter laws, up from 39 percent in April.

But many observers think Harrisburg isn?t ready for major gun-control measures.

?I do expect an assault-rifle ban to be enacted federally, but in Pennsylvania, I would be surprised if we see any significant legislation coming out of this,? said Michael Young, a retired Penn State political scientist who is head of his own consulting firm.

That?s in part, he said, because of the strong, pro-gun culture that dominates large regions of the state. But it is also because the facts might show that the Newtown massacre owes much to breakdowns in the nation?s mental health system.

?This is a problem without a solution at this point,? Young said. ?There?s no consensus about what to do beyond assault rifles, and that?s a federal issue. ... So without the governor being on board and bringing enthusiasm, moving a gun bill in Pennsylvania is a nonstarter.?

There might be related areas where lawmakers can work toward the mutual goal of a safer society with less conflict.

Rep. Todd Stephens, R-Montgomery County, for example, said Monday he will introduce a bill that requires state police to forward information on involuntary mental health commitments ? a disqualifier for gun ownership ? to the federal government.

It?s a modest step, because state background checks already include this data, but it could prevent a mentally ill person who would be flagged in Pennsylvania from crossing into Maryland to buy a gun.

Even top gun-rights supporters such as Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Butler County, support background checks in concept, and there might be room for all sides to work toward improvements in the system.

Republican leaders in the Senate and House left the door open to these discussions when the 2013-14 legislative session begins.

Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi, R-Delaware County, said in a statement, ?It is incumbent upon us to review our laws and see if there are changes that should be made not only to gun laws, but mental health laws, school laws and any other relevant areas.?

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Ron Marsico, R-Lower Paxton Township, vowed ?a closer look at every single piece of legislation that may have prevented, or could in the future prevent, such an atrocity.?

The National Rifle Association?s top lobbyist in Pennsylvania, John Hohenwarter, did not respond to a request for an interview for this story.

But the Legislature?s strongest Second Amendment supporters cautioned Tuesday that they will fight to protect the right of Pennsylvanians to own a gun, in part because it is their belief that the Newtown tragedy was the product of an evil mind, not lax gun laws.

On Tuesday, Metcalfe advanced the argument that the recent mass shootings across America only give support to the notion that too much gun control ? including public spaces such as schools or parks that have been declared gun-free zones ? is a bad thing.

?We don?t know the hearts of people and what?s in their hearts that are going to cause them to do these wicked acts,? Metcalfe said in a telephone interview. ?If they?re going to do something, somebody needs to be there with the force to stop them.?

Kim Stolfer, chairman of the Pennsylvania-based Firearm Owners Against Crime, noted that by his count the Newtown shooter, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, broke 18 state or federal laws in his actions. ?So if we had 19 [laws], it?s going to make the kids safer?? he asked. ?It?s a red herring.? ?

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Instagram, the popular mobile photo-sharing service now owned by Facebook, is the target of a storm of outrage, much of it on social media, after changes in its user agreement give it broader rights to use its members' photos in advertisements.

In a blog post that offered few details, Instagram said the changes will help its service "function more easily as part of Facebook by being able to share info between the two groups." Facebook Inc. also recently updated its privacy policy to allow for more integration with Instagram.

"This means we can do things like fight spam more effectively, detect system and reliability problems more quickly, and build better features for everyone by understanding how Instagram is used," the blog post said, adding that the updates also "help protect you, and prevent spam and abuse as we grow."

But the biggest change riling users and privacy advocates is Instagram's new assertion that it may now receive payments from businesses to use your photos, user name and other data "in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you."

Instagram's short blog post on Monday made no mention of advertisements or other commercial activities, though it offered links to the new privacy policy and terms of service. Those documents spell out what the service could do, but say little about actual plans.

Facebook, which bought Instagram in September for $740 million, already uses your photo and other information about you to show advertisements to your friends. Say you've "liked" Samsung Mobile. Facebook might then show your friends ads for Samsung and include the fact that you "like" the company's page. Your profile photo and name would appear with what Facebook calls "sponsored stories."

Instagram's new policy, which takes effect Jan. 16, suggests that Facebook wants to integrate Instagram into its ad-serving system.

Under the current policy, Instagram is not as explicit in saying how it uses its members' photographs. But the company already has the right to use people's public content as it sees fit, though the photographers keep so-called "ownership" of the photos. The new terms make it clearer that Instagram could use your photos to market to your friends.

"These services are publicly advertised as 'free,' but the free label masks costs to privacy, which include the responsibility of monitoring how these companies sell data, and even how they change policies over time," said Chris Hoofnagle, director of Information Privacy Programs at the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology.

The fast-growing service has become a popular way to share photos from cellphones. The Instagram app, available for the iPhone and Android devices, offers a variety of filters to give photos a retro feel or other look. Although many other apps also offer filters for enhancing photos, they don't offer the sharing features and community aspects of Instagram.

Instagram has had a loyal following since before Facebook bought it. The purchase worried some of the earliest fans of the service, who feared Facebook would swallow up their beloved community.

Users must accept the new terms when they go into effect or leave the Instagram.

Twitter users were vowing to cancel their Instagram accounts. They complained that the new terms would essentially let the service sell people's photos for ads.

But if Facebook's experience is any indication, few users tend to carry out such threats. Over the years, Facebook's frequent and complicated privacy policy changes have irked users, but the social media site has grown to house more than a billion user accounts since its founding in 2004.

Instagram doesn't currently run any ads. As of now, the free service has no way to make money and brings in no revenue to Facebook.

"As we have said in the past, we are continuing to evaluate when, how, and in what form advertising inside Instagram plays a role in creating value for users and brands alike," Facebook spokeswoman Meredith Chin said in an email.

?Hinduism third largest religion of world; India home to most religions?

Washington: Hinduism is the third largest religion of the world after Christianity and Islam and 97 percent of all Hindus live in three Hindu-majority countries ? India, Nepal and Mauritius, according to a study.

India, which accounts for majority of world?s Hindus, is also home to almost all the major religions of the world, a Pew research said Tuesday.

Pew demographic study ? based on analysis of more than 2,500 censuses, surveys and population registers ? finds 2.2 billion Christians (32 percent of the world?s population), 1.6 billion Muslims (23 percent), 1 billion Hindus (15 percent), nearly 500 million Buddhists (seven percent) and 14 million Jews (0.2 percent) around the world as of 2010.

In addition, more than 400 million people (six percent) practice various folk or traditional religions, including African traditional religions, Chinese folk religions, Native American religions and Australian aboriginal religions.

An estimated 58 million people ? slightly less than one percent of the global population ? belong to other religions, including the Baha?i faith, Jainism, Sikhism, Shintoism, Taoism, Tenrikyo, Wicca and Zoroastrianism, to mention just a few, it said.

Pew said overwhelmingly, Hindus and Christians tend to live in countries where they are in the majority.

Ninety seven percent of all Hindus live in the world?s three Hindu-majority countries (India, Mauritius and Nepal), and nearly nine-in-ten Christians (87 percent) are found in the world?s 157 Christian majority countries.

The median age of two major groups ? Muslims (23 years) and Hindus (26) ? is younger than the median age of the world?s overall population (28), it said adding that all the other groups are older than the global median.

Christians have a median age of 30, followed by members of other religions (32), adherents of folk or
traditional religions (33), the religiously unaffiliated (34) and Buddhists (34).

Jews have the highest median age (36), more than a dozen years older than the youngest group, Muslims.

Hinduism, the study said, is the most geographically concentrated of the eight religious groups analysed in this report. Less than one per cent of Hindus live outside Asia and the Pacific.

India, the report said is home to 11 per cent of the world Muslim population ? the second largest after Indonesia.

The 10 countries with the largest number of Muslims are home to fully two-thirds (66 per cent) of all Muslims.

The largest share lives in Indonesia (13 percent), followed by India (11 percent), Pakistan (11 percent), Bangladesh (8 percent), Nigeria (5 percent), Egypt (5 percent), Iran (5 percent), Turkey (5per cent), Algeria (2 percent) and Morocco (2 percent).

Muslims make up a majority of the population in 49 countries. Nearly three-quarters of all Muslims (73 percent) live in these countries.

Although Muslims are a minority in India (14 percent of the total population), India nonetheless has one of the largest Muslim populations in the world. Pew said India has the largest share (47 percent) of
all members of other religions, including millions of Sikhs and Jains.

Outside India, the largest shares of people who belong to faiths in the ?other religion? category are in China (16 percent), Japan (10 percent), Taiwan (7 percent), North Korea (5 percent) and the United States (3 percent).

Many years ago a colleague spoke of re-membering .. the act of bringing back to yourself all the significant stories of love, hope, resilience and blessing from your life. ?Kind of like putting yourself back together ? this time highlighting what is really important to you.

At this time of year re-membering is happening all around us. ?Days are filled with traditions stringing this year to each year before. ?The other night I found myself listening to childhood Christmas songs and standing in front of our tree. The living room was lit only by the little white lights carefully woven on each branch ? a task I do each year to honor a friend whose life was cut short. ?Just as I had done the year before and the year before that, I carefully hung ornaments on the tree. ?There are the ornaments from the first years of each of our children?s lives. ?There are the little instruments, ballet slippers, ice skates, snow boards, surf boards, fishing poles, tents and kayaks ? all symbolizing something one of the kids were into as their life and interests unfolded. ?But my favorite ornaments are the pictures from each year .. each child, each age and stage ? the goofy hair, the braces, the face smeared with berries, the graduation, the girlfriend or boyfriend, the puppy. ?Re-membering.

This year, I pray you will take the time to re-member your life. ?Let yourself feel all the important stories that speak of your love and devotion to your family, to your friends, to what is right and beautiful in this life. Nothing is more important or urgent in this time ? no gift, no task, no ?should?. Feel your heart swell with gratefulness and blessing. ?This is the gift of Christmas ? it is a reminder that what is most precious is already among and within us.

Guinness world's oldest person dies in Iowa at 115: family

(Reuters) - Dina Manfredini, a 115-year-old Iowa woman who was crowned the world's oldest person less than two weeks ago by Guinness World Records, died on Monday, her granddaughter told Reuters.

Lori Logli said Manfredini, who was born in Pievepelago, Italy, died at the retirement center in Johnston, Iowa, where she was living.

Guinness said the world's oldest living person is now a Japanese man named Jiroemon Kimura, who is also 115 years.

Although Manfredini claimed the title for just 13 days, her reign as the world's oldest person was not the shortest on record, Guinness said.

That distinction belongs to American-born Emma Tillman, who died four days after she was named the world's oldest person in 2007.

Mary Kathryn Somerville

Mary Kathryn Somerville, 67, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012. Brosh Chapel Cedar Rapids assisted the family.

Mary was born at Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence, Iowa, on Sept. 13, 1945, to Leon and Maxine McGrath. Her education began in a one room school house in Buchanan County. After graduating from St. John?s High School, Mary attended the State College of Iowa (UNI), earning her Bachelor?s Degree in Elementary Education. Mary went on to earn her Master?s Degree from the University of Iowa in Special Education and Education Administration.

Mary had three passions in life, which she devoted herself wholeheartedly to: Family, Education and Conservation.

Mary began her diverse career in education as a teacher in Racine, Wis., in 1966. Following that, she taught for the Mental Health Institute in Independence, served as an educational strategist and resource teacher for the Midwest Regional Resource Center project for the U.S. Department of Education. In 1975, Mary taught special education for the Iowa City Community School District, before moving to the Grant Wood Area Education Agency. From 1980 to 1992, Mary was the senior educator in Child Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. In 1992, she returned to Grant Wood AEA as a regional facilitator. She finished her career back at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 2004 to 2010 as educational consultant and manager of Educational Services in the Department of Rehabilitation Therapies. Her co-workers described her as a strong, compassionate leader who was very kind and respectful.

Mary has been described by a friend as a ?conservation extraordinaire.? She had a passion for showing people how they can be better stewards of the land and how they can do their part in keeping watersheds healthy. She enjoyed sharing her interest in conservation with everyone. She was elected as commissioner of the Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation Board in 1990, where she devoted many years to education and bringing together farmers and members of the community. She also chaired the Clear Creek Watershed Advisory Board from its formation in June 1998, until her retirement in 2010. In her various leadership roles, Mary received a number of awards and recognition for her tireless and impactful conservation efforts. When you drive over a bridge in Johnson County and see a sign telling you the name of the creek you are by, you can thank Mary for that.

Mary had a great love for life and lit up any room she entered. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Some of her favorite moments were spent drinking coffee and watching the birds outside the kitchen window with her best friend, and the love of her life, Kevin.

She was incredibly devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren and all of her family. She loved to travel, especially to the Rocky Mountains, listen to music, watch the Hawkeyes, quilting, taking care of her beautiful gardens and take time to enjoy nature?s beauty.

Every day of her life was filled with smiles, strength and grace. May she stay forever young.

She will be greatly missed by so many friends and family members, including her husband, Kevin Somerville; her son, Brennan (Stacia) McGrath, their children Walter, Graham and Isabelle Robles; stepdaughter, Jessi Williams, her children Kyla and Dylan Williams; her daughter, Kristi Somerville; and her son, Seth (Peggy) Somerville and their son, Max Somerville. Her brothers, Ron (Alice) McGrath and Tom (Linda) McGrath; as well as all of her nephews and nieces.

She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Lois Ridout; her brother-in law, Keith (Joni) Somerville; Kay (Al) Strother; and all of her nieces and nephews on the Somerville side.

It was Mary?s wish that a celebration of her life be held at her home located in rural Oxford. An open house will be held at 2398 Echo Ave. NW, Oxford, IA 52322 from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Clear Creek Watershed Enhancement Project, Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation District, 51 Escort Lane, Iowa City, IA 52240.

Iran warns against Patriot deployment on Syria frontier

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Iran's army chief of staff warned NATO on Saturday that stationing Patriot anti-missile batteries on Turkey's border with Syria was setting the stage for world war.

General Hassan Firouzabadi, whose country has been a staunch supporter of President Bashar al-Assad throughout the 21-month uprising against his rule, called on the Western military alliance to reverse its decision to deploy the defense system.

"Each one of these Patriots is a black mark on the world map, and is meant to cause a world war," Firouzabadi said, according to the Iranian Students' News Agency. "They are making plans for a world war and this is very dangerous for the future of humanity and for the future of Europe itself."

Despite the warning, Firouzabadi did not threaten any action against Turkey in his speech to senior commanders at the National Defence University in Tehran. "We are Turkey's friend and we want security for Turkey," he said.

NATO's U.S. commander said on Friday the alliance was deploying the anti-missile system along Syria's northern frontier because Assad's forces had fired Scud missiles that landed near Turkish territory.

Damascus denies firing the long-range, Soviet-built rockets. But, forced on the defensive by mainly Sunni Muslim rebels, Syria's 47-year-old Alawite president has resorted increasingly to air strikes and artillery to stem their advances.

Warplanes bombed insurgents on the airport road in southeast Damascus on Saturday and government forces pounded a town to the southwest, activists said, in a month-long and so far fruitless campaign to dislodge rebels around the capital.

Activists also reported heavy fighting in the Palestinian district of Yarmouk in southern Damascus between rebels and fighters from a pro-Assad Palestinian faction.

In the north, rebels said they had seized control of an infantry college in the northern Aleppo province, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said there was still fierce fighting around the site by nightfall on Saturday, when it estimated at least 70 people had been killed across the country.

Desperate food shortages are growing in parts of Syria and residents of Aleppo say fist fights and dashes across the civil war front lines have become part of the daily struggle to secure a loaf of bread.

SYRIA "CHAOTIC AND DANGEROUS"

NATO military commander Admiral James Stavridis said a handful of Scud missiles were launched inside Syria in recent days towards opposition targets and "several landed fairly close to the Turkish border, which is very worrisome".

It was not clear how close they came. Turkey, a NATO member once friendly toward Assad but now among the main allies of the rebels, has complained for months of artillery and gunfire across the border, some of which has caused deaths. It sought the installation of missile defenses some weeks ago.

"Syria is clearly a chaotic and dangerous situation, but we have an absolute obligation to defend the borders of the alliance from any threat emanating from that troubled state," Stavridis wrote in a blog on Friday.

Batteries of U.S.-made Patriot missiles, designed to shoot down the likes of the Scuds popularly associated with Iraq's 1991 Gulf War under Saddam Hussein, are about to be deployed by the U.S., German and Dutch armies, each of which is sending up to 400 troops to operate and protect the rocket systems.

Damascus has accused Western powers of backing what it portrays as a Sunni Islamist "terrorist" campaign against it and says Washington and Europe have publicly voiced concerns of late that Assad's forces might resort to chemical weapons solely as a pretext for preparing a possible military intervention.

In contrast to NATO's air campaign in support of Libya's successful revolt last year against Muammar Gaddafi, Western powers have shied away from intervention in Syria. They have cited the greater size and ethnic and religious complexity of a major Arab state at the heart of the Middle East - but have also lacked U.N. approval due to Russia's support for Assad.

ASSAD WARNED

Forty thousand people have now been killed in what has become the most protracted and destructive of the Arab revolts.

As well as the growing rebel challenge, Syria faces an alliance of Arab and Western powers who stepped up diplomatic support for Assad's political foes at a meeting in Morocco on Wednesday and warned him he could not win Syria's civil war.

Assad's opponents have consistently underestimated his tenacity throughout the uprising, but their warnings appeared to be echoed by even his staunch ally Moscow when the Kremlin's Middle East envoy Mikhail Bogdanov conceded he might be ousted.

Russia said on Friday Bogdanov's comments did not reflect a change in policy. France, one of the first countries to grant formal recognition to Syria's political opposition, said Moscow's continued support for Assad was perplexing.

"They risk really being on the wrong side of history. We don't see their objective reasoning that justifies them keeping this position because even the credible arguments they had don't stand up anymore," a French diplomatic source said, arguing that by remaining in power, Assad was prolonging chaos and fuelling the radicalization of Sunni Islamist rebels.

European Union leaders who met in Brussels on Friday said all options were on the table to support the Syrian opposition, raising the possibility that non-lethal military equipment or even arms could eventually be supplied.

In their strongest statement of support for the Syrian opposition since the uprising began, EU leaders instructed their foreign ministers to assess all possibilities to increase the pressure on Assad.

With rebels edging into the capital, a senior NATO official said Assad was likely to fall and the Western military alliance should make plans to protect against the threat of his chemical arsenal falling into the wrong hands.

HUNGER SPREADS

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem told U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos on Saturday that U.S. and EU sanctions on Syria were to blame for hardship in his country and urged the United Nations to call for them to be lifted.

Moualem also called on the United Nations to expand its relief efforts in Syria to include reconstruction "of what has been destroyed by the armed terrorist groups", state news agency SANA said, referring to the rebels.

The World Food Programme (WFP) says as many as a million Syrians may go hungry this winter, as worsening security conditions make it harder to reach conflict zones.

The conflict has also driven a flood of Syrians to seek shelter in neighboring countries, which already host half a million registered refugees and perhaps hundreds of thousands more who have not declared themselves.

Two and a half million people have been displaced inside Syria, leading to fears of widespread suffering this winter.

"The international community needs to be prepared to step up its efforts," United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres told Reuters Television during a visit to Lebanon's Bekaa Valley on Saturday.

"This is not a conflict like many others. It's a very brutal conflict with a humanitarian tragedy associated," he said, calling for greater assistance to Syria's refugees and their host countries - Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq.
