It's official: Cubs trade Garza to Texas Rangers

Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza was scheduled to pitch Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but that is no longer the case. He's been traded to the Texas Rangers, the Cubs announced.

The Cubs are getting back third baseman Mike Olt along with starting pitchers Justin Grimm and C.J. Edwards. There will also be two players to be named later.

Garza, 29, is 6-1 with a 3.17 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 62 strikeouts in 71 innings this season. Since a disastrous start in Cincinnati on June 11, Garza has been as locked in as anyone, going 5-0 with a 1.24 ERA in 43 2/3 innings. He's set to be a free agent after the 2013 season, so unless there's a contract extension coming, this is a rental.

A trade sending Garza to the Rangers late last week hit a snag when the two clubs exchanged medicals on the proposed players involved, but CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reports Garza was not the player with questionable medicals.

Grimm, a 24-year-old rookie, is 7-7 with a 6.37 ERA in 17 starts for the Rangers this season.

Olt, 24, is a former sandwich-round (between first and second) pick. He's hitting .219/.318/.438 with 17 doubles, 12 homers and 34 RBI in 68 games this season across Double-A and Triple-A. He has been hot of late, however, hitting .324/.422/.703 with three homers in his past 12 games. He entered the season ranked as the 22nd-best prospect in baseball by Baseball America. Last season for Double-A Frisco, he hit .288/.398/.579 with 28 homers in 95 games.

Edwards, 21, is 8-2 with a 1.82 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 122 strikeouts in 93 1/3 innings for Class-A Hickory. His stock has skyrocketed since being a 48th-round pick in 2011.

And, again, the Cubs are going to get two more players in the deal.
