(AP) ? Yoko Ono and Amnesty International awarded the Russian punk band Pussy Riot this year's LennonOno grant for peace.

Ono presented the award to Pyotr Verzilov, husband of Nadia Tolokonnikova ? one of three imprisoned members of Pussy Riot sentenced in August to two years in prison for performing an irreverent song mocking Russian President Vladimir Putin inside Moscow's main cathedral.

"It's a terrible thing that all three girls have been jailed for not doing anything wrong. They were just standing for freedom of speech," Ono said at a ceremony in New York City.

Verzilov thanked Ono, saying the grant increased international pressure on Russian authorities to release the women.

The LennonOno Grant for Peace is given every two years to honor Yoko Ono's late husband John Lennon's dedication to peace and human rights.

Nikolaj Arndt's Eye-Fooling Street Art Will Astound ... - AOL Real Estate

Want to make your living room a little more cozy? Here's an idea: Throw in a pit with hungry alligators snapping their jagged teeth at your feet.

Well, not real ones, of course. But Russian-born artist Nikolaj Arndt can paint you a picture of them that looks pretty darn real -- and that looks like those gators are leaping right out of your floor.

Arndt is a street artist who lives in Germany, and he paints trompe l'oeil -- French for "fools the eye" -- pictures on floors and sidewalks, giving the illusion that his art is popping up out of the surfaces he draws on. We first got a glimpse of his amazing skill on the blog Laughing Squid. The photo above is one of Arndt's artworks on a living room floor.

Arndt isn't the only artist to master these kinds of eye-popping images. Artist Julian Beever is also well known for creating 3-D artworks using chalk on sidewalks.

Arndt explained in an interview with pxleyes.com that he began drawing his eye-fooling images on sidewalks with chalk about three years ago. He would enter festivals in Germany where he would showcase his street art. He also uses paint to create works in homes.

"For me, the main thing in art is to give positive emotions to the audience," Arndt told pxleyes.com. "When people are smiling looking at my pictures, I'm happy."

We know you're dying to see more of Arndt's work, so click through the gallery below.

Correction: An earlier version of this story included a photo gallery that featured artworks for which artist Nikolaj Arndt was not the creator.

Man holds hostage in Pittsburgh, posts to Facebook

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? An armed man with a military background took a hostage inside an upper floor of a downtown Pittsburgh office building on Friday and posted Facebook updates saying he had "lost everything."

Police Chief Nate Harper identified the hostage-taker as Klein Michael Thaxton, who wrote on Facebook that people will "never have to woryy (sic) about me again" after he took a man hostage inside the office of a benefits administration firm on the 16th floor of Three Gateway Center.

Harper said Thaxton had been cooperative, although he has made no demands.

Thaxton's friends responded to his Facebook postings by urging him to end the situation peacefully, including one who asked him to think of his mother.

The Facebook postings have the potential to both help and harm the negotiations, Harper said.

It's helpful that Thaxton can see "that people are concerned about his well-being," Harper said, but "it is a distraction for negotiating."

Harper noted that Thaxton remains calm and they want to keep him that way.

Workers milled around near the building after they were ordered out shortly after 8 a.m. when employees in a nearby office called 911 to report an emergency at CW Breitsman Associates. It's not clear what led Thaxton to target the company, which runs employee-benefits programs for other businesses.

Police brought the suspect's mother to the office building and put her in touch with Thaxton, Harper said. She said she doesn't know what drove her son to take a hostage, he said.

A worker on the 16th floor described a woman running into her office yelling for someone to call 911. Kathi Dvorak, an administrative assistant at AXA Advisors, said a second woman ran in and said her office was being robbed.

Harper said authorities know the name of the man taken hostage, but he did not release it. He had previously described the hostage-taker as having a military background but didn't elaborate.

Thaxton has a criminal record that includes a guilty plea to robbery earlier this year and a minimum six-month jail sentence.

Joel Kirchartz, a 28-year-old web developer who works on the 17th floor, said he and his co-workers looked out the windows Friday morning and "a bunch of cops pulled up with all sorts of sirens going; there must have been 20 of them." He said he went downstairs to find out what was happening and by the time he got outside, police had sealed the building.

Another worker, Sarah Vereb, said she was at her desk when she was ordered to leave the building shortly after a friend called to report that she wasn't being allowed up from the lobby.

Hundreds of workers walked down the stairwell. Vereb said the exodus was orderly and "very, very quiet."

A phone message left for the building's Santa Monica, Calif.-based ownership group was not immediately returned. The building complex management office confirmed the evacuation and said it was working with police.

Tax Breaks For Oil And Gas Industry Announced

More tax breaks designed to bolster investment in North Sea oil and gas have been unveiled by George Osborne.

The Chancellor said income from older fields will be spared from paying full duty to ensure they are fully exploited.

It is the latest in a series of reliefs introduced for the industry, after the coalition Government was criticised for hiking the supplementary charge on North Sea producers from 20% to 32% last year.

The new Brown Field Allowance will shield up to ?500m of income from the charge when firms are boosting production from established oil or gas fields - potentially cutting their tax bill by ?160m.

The move is expected to cost the Exchequer ?100m per year initially - but officials insist long-term tax revenues will be significantly higher.

Mr Osborne said: "Today's tax allowance is more good news for the North Sea, good news for jobs and good news for the broader economy.

"It will give companies the incentive to get the most out of older fields, creating jobs and delivering more revenue for taxpayers.

"This Government has signalled its absolute determination to get more investment in the North Sea, a huge national asset."

The announcement was welcomed by Oil and Gas UK.

The industry body said the measure could attract at least ?2bn of investment in the short term and is a step towards a potential 50 years of further activity in the North Sea.

Why Every NBA Fan Should Be Cheering for Jeff Green's Boston Celtics Comeback

The 2012-2013 NBA season will see Jeff Green's return to the Boston Celtics, and NBA fans should be pulling for him after what he endured last winter.

In December 2011, a routine physical detected an aortic aneurysm, something that could have an ended Green's career, or worse yet, his life.

Fortunately for Green, he underwent successful surgery to repair the issue and was eventually cleared to play again.

All that being said, the experience humanized Green. At the end of the day, he's more than just a professional athlete. He's a human being, which means he's no different from you and me.

And that's why every NBA fan should be cheering for Green's comeback.

We've all had moments when the deck was stacked against us, but through courage and perseverance, we're able to overcome even the most insurmountable obstacles. Green is obviously no different.

An athletic forward known for his ability to run the floor, Green was a highly-conditioned athlete in his prime at the time of his diagnosis. But after having both his life and career threatened, the 26-year-old was forced to step away from the game until he was well enough to play again.

When that day came, Green wasn't yet quite out of the woods. Due to the severity of his condition, he essentially had to start over from scratch and rebuild his body, all the while knowing full well that he may be forced into an early retirement.

But Green didn't give up on the game, and fans, regardless of where their loyalties lie, shouldn't write him off, either. You don't have to root for the Celtics, but you should appreciate and respect Green's situation.

Green's comeback is one of those momentous victories ingrained in everyday life. Such victories may seem small on the surface, but they are what binds us together as a society, regardless of occupation or social status.

Say what you want about his contract, which is to be fair, overvalued, at 4 years and $36 million. Yes, the Celtics are taking a gamble at that price, but GM Danny Ainge clearly saw it as one worth taking. Plus, both sides most likely built certain clauses into the contract in order to protect themselves in the event that Green experiences a setback.

Nonetheless, Ainge displayed his faith in Green by signing him to a long-term deal.

The Celtics will open the season in South Beach against Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and the Miami Heat in a fitting rematch of last year's Eastern Conference Finals. Though there won't be any ubuntu-laden cheers from the crowd, Green should at least receive a modest reception when he checks into the game.

If Green does indeed return to form this season, it will be a remarkable achievement, but not just for him and the Celtics. His success would further show us that true courage and faith?in ourselves and in others?is crucial to making the seemingly impossible possible.

Sports is something that returns us to normalcy. That's why we watch them. For a few hours here and there, we can fully immerse ourselves in the game we love, and despite all the stress that comes with devoting oneself to a sports franchise, we ultimately end up feeling better than we did initially. With each victory comes a wave of excitement.

That's what sports is all about.

Green's situation is no different. If you're a Celtics fan, an NBA fan or just an admirer of sports in general, tip your hat off to Jeff Green for fighting adversity and uncertainty?because we do it everyday.

Each time we overcome that tedious hurtle or meet that daunting challenge, it's a true testament to the individual. Those are intangible victories?the ones that aren't recorded in columns.

And those victories are the ones that count the most.
